July 27, 201113 yr Hey everyone. i have heard some of you talking about soaking oats and wheat and barley and stuff and i was wondering what brand are you using and how long do you leave it to soak. is the wheat just the bagged stuff? thanks in advance "Brands" are not what we use.................as some of us are show breeders or have quantities of birds we buy our seed in bulk in large sacks with no brands as such written on it. Seek the grains mentioned and dont expect to find them in name brand packets on a supermarket shelf. Go to a stockfeed supply place Edited July 27, 201113 yr by **KAZ**
July 27, 201113 yr I am not a show breeder so I use a high quality brand I get it from an Indian/Sri lankan shop near dandenong Victoria. I get it in half kg bags

I feed them dry in separate containers when the birds have chicks but I don't soak/sprout. Dont soak/sprout them unless you follow strict hygiene guidelines. I have never done it and prefer to use other methods to supplement thier feed. No doubt if done right it is a great way of getting good nutrients in to your birds.
July 31, 201113 yr I use half pigeon mix and half small parrot mix. Soak this overnight, drain every 12 hours. By day 3 it has begun to sprout. I just go that from my local fodder store.
July 31, 201113 yr Could you post a photo of what your oats look like so that i know what i am looking for. thanks kaz. What i do is feed 50/50 soaked horse oats & sunflower seeds. (1) > For the correct quantity < 3/4 fill a 2 litre plastic ice cream container with a 50/50 mix of horse oats and sunflower seeds. (2) Rinse it through a strainer until the water runs clean. (3) Then in a slightly larger container ,"say a 4 litre plastic ice cream container " add two cap fulls of bleach. (4) Then add the 50/50 rinsed mix of oats and sunflower, fill with water and stir it around, then leave soak for 24 hours. (5) After 24 hours rinse the soaked oats and sunflower seeds through a siv then leave to drain,i do this for three days. (6) After the third day i break it up into 2 litre quantities and add a teaspoon of wheatgerm to each then refrigerate to stop the sprouting. (7) Feed it to the birds. It is very important to get a routine going and stick to it,throughout the sprouting process the seed should smell nutty,if you are suspect chuck it out. Two days Three days
July 31, 201113 yr The bleach is to stop any bacteria that may form on the seed during the soaking period. Very inportant
July 31, 201113 yr Thanks for the advice. CAn you soak normal budgie seed. To answer your question... yes you can but it's better with a seed that has a better germ. Like Wheat or Oats.
