Posted July 26, 201113 yr I was just wondering what are the best foods to help fatten up budgies for breeding? i can feel the keel bone on a few and was wondering what would fatten them up the best.
July 26, 201113 yr You can ever soak seed like oats over night or just put unsoaked oats in the aviary which is the easiest.
July 26, 201113 yr I've been told hulled oats is the best. Just be wary of hens that find a nest and don't leave, meaning they eat the oats and then go straight back inside You get overly chunky hens that way lol
July 26, 201113 yr I got some hulled oats and soaked them and they disappeared in less than 5 minutes
July 26, 201113 yr I just use feeder oats (normal oats) with the husk still on, heaps cheaper. I soak the feeder oats for part my soft food for breeding birds and I put unsoaked feeder oats in the aviary for all birds but only in the colds months because oats will make your birds over weight if you are not careful.
July 27, 201113 yr Author thanks for the info , my budgies were in great condition and all have finished laying eggs and are incubating - but i have noticed a few that have lost condition and i can feel the keel bone is pointy , even though their crops are bulging full
