Posted July 16, 201113 yr Hi my name is Ryan and i have not had much luck with budgies. the first set of budgies that i bought from a certain place(not allowed to say which store) died after about 10 months of me getting them. i looked on the internet to see if what i was doing was right. It was, i am giving them quality seed, (trill) they have cuttle fish, always have treats. get veggies all the time and also fruits and have plenty of toys. they seemed happy just didnt last long. Anyway getting to the point i bought two males from a different place about a year ago and then when the last hens died from the "bad batch" i went to the "good place" and bought two hens. that was three days ago. I can already see how much healthier these birds are and friendlier:P . i can get one of them to perch on my finger and one likes to land on my head. i was wondering how many days/ weeks i should wait until introducing the pairs into breeding cabinets. Please help. i would love to get my first ever pinkies. Thanks in advance.
July 16, 201113 yr Are you quarantining the new birds? They are not mixed together are they? Did you put the cocks with the "bad" hens? How old are the birds? They should be at least 12 months old before they breed. What are you planning for your breeding set up? any photos of this so we can offer some advice?
July 16, 201113 yr Author i have a big avairy and a breeding cabinet so i can separate the two pairs when need be. the hens are not separated as i do not have the space, i dont know what to do.
July 16, 201113 yr There is little point quarantining now as if they had any illness they it would have been shared by now. For future reference you should read some topics on here about quarantining.
July 16, 201113 yr Author sorry the birds are all from the same place anyway thanks dave for the help but i still would like to know the answers to my first questions if that is okay.
July 16, 201113 yr The answer to your question depends on how old they are. Photos would be handy, do they have rings on. I would let them settle in for a period first to start with.
July 17, 201113 yr Author the males i have had for about 10 months and they may have been that old when i got them but the females i dont know. they all have rings on and i will try to get some pics.
July 18, 201113 yr Author This is Mo one of my Cock's. (Is his beak the early signs of scaley face or is it just some shel grit stuck to his face. This is Puff another cock. Molly one of my new hens and last but not least Bonnie. Sorry about the picture quality. couldn't get great pics of their rings. can you please tell me if they are in breeding condition and also what type of bird they are. (i.e clearwing, spangle pied all those terms) Please Help THANKS IN ADVANCE:lol: Edited July 18, 201113 yr by Pride
July 20, 201113 yr Hi, don't know if I can help much, are the rings on your hens closed show breeders rings or just coloured split rings? If breeders, you should be able to get age of your birds from that. If you have two pair and cages I think I would put one hen in each cage, no nest box yet, worm them etc. check for scale if you think Cock has it. Treat that as well , when your sure all birds are settled really healthy, not moulting and in breeding condition. Then think about pairing them up see if they bond etc. then introduce the nest box's. . GO TO F.A.Q AND READ EVERYTHING YOU CAN FIND ABOUT HOW TO BREED ETC. ( while your birds are getting ready to breed) then you will be able to better manage them. Hope this helps a bit until some more experienced breeders advise you.
July 20, 201113 yr Author Thanks Robyn. My cock did have scaley face but he is being treated in a hospital cage. I have to clean my whole avairy to get rid of the mites. i know a bit about breeding i was more interested in knowing the colour combinations. thanks
July 20, 201113 yr I'd like to know what this mutation is as well looks different to what I've come across. 1. maybe sky cinnamon. 2 Cobalt normal 3??? 4 normal Mauve/Grey ? These are guess's only as I'm still trying to work out genetics as well. Others will know for sure.
July 20, 201113 yr Author Thanks Robyn, Number one who's name is Mo is definately cinnamin wing and number 2< Puff is a cobalt andi think your right about Number 4(bonnie). But i have no idea about what mollie, number 3 is.

July 20, 201113 yr That one looks TCB yf? Maybe? Looks like that to me too Ratzy, but more photos needed ****PS Must be said that scalyface mostly affect birds whose immunity system is down. To suggest a minimal settling in period before breeding is not a good idea...these birds need to be a good few months getting them right before you even think of nestboxes Edited July 20, 201113 yr by **KAZ**
July 22, 201113 yr None are in breeding conditions, and they look like the type that wont breed for you anytime soon. I would go and grab a few more budgies if you want try breeding again.
July 23, 201113 yr Author REally, is that because of the ceres. the photos make the ceres look much lighter. Or is it because of body condition??
July 23, 201113 yr I agree.......they arent in breeding condition......................the ceres tell the story
July 23, 201113 yr Author Do you believe that they will come in to breeding condition in about a month or is it hard to tell
July 23, 201113 yr Do you believe that they will come in to breeding condition in about a month or is it hard to tell They will come into breeding condition with all things come together.......health, not moulting, good diet, seasonal changes etc. It isnt so much a time thing, but its a condition or state of health thing.
July 24, 201113 yr I've had budgies come into condition in a couple of weeks and some have taken months. I found the more vitamin supplements the faster but that is just my opinion.
July 24, 201113 yr If a budgie was being offered a wide varied diet including fruits and vegies as well as a top seed blend there should be no reason to use a multivitamin in a bottle.
