I'm looking at buying a budgie & just wanted some advice on what to look for (good/bad) I'd like to know that I'm buying a healthy budgie that has been well cared for

Hi , to start with you are better off buying a young bird but if that isn't possible, look for a lively bird with nice sleek feathers, nothing that is fluffed up, check the bottom area to make sure there is no wet area or pooey mess, check above the cere to make sure it is not wet or stained and finely when you pick your little bird out ask to hold it and feel the keel bone, there should be a little meat over it, if it is very sharp don't buy it pick another bird. If the bird has a ring check the year number which is written side ways on the ring and the colour of the ring, 2011 is purple, 2010 is blue 2009 is red and 2008 is black.

I hope this helps, someone else might have more advice that I have missed.

If you go to a breeder you will have a better chance of getting a healthy young baby bird.

Splat's advice is good. I would also add to look around at all of the birds to make sure they are all healthy. Because even if you pick a healthy one, if it is housed with sick birds, yours could come down with something later on, as well.

Thanks for your advice & also how many weeks old do they have to be before I can take home to tame?? I have found some babies for sale on Gumtree that say just out of nesting box/ some still in nesting box... ?

Dont buy any that say "just out of nesting box or still in nesting box" they need to have been out for a week or two and fully independant and eating seed. Also it is against gumtree rules for people to sell any from the nestingbox...that advert needs to be reported for selling underaged baby birds.
