Hi everyone,

I joined a couple of days ago after spending some time on Google looking for information about Nest Boxes, which is how I came across this fantastic forum!

I have two budgies Tsugi (Female) and Hikaru (Male - photo below). I also keep a Green Canary by the name of Yoshi (who lives in his own cage). All the birds have Japanese names :)))

Eventually I would like to allow Tsugi and Hikaru to breed, which is why I was searching on information about Nest Boxes. The Nest Boxes in the Pet Shops just seemed too small for budgies and I haven't found anything other than MDF. So I've decided to make one myself using information posted by Daz some years ago.

I'm not sure what type of budgies I have - they were bought at different Pet Shops to make sure they were not closely related. Tsugi appears to be some sort of pied breed mix, but I have no idea about Hikaru.

Hikaru is tame and will perch on a finger, but Tsugi is a different story and I'm yet to get a good picture of her :)

Later I'll post some more information about my attempts to build a Nest Box and how Tsugi and Hikaru are getting along.

Hi and welcome. I wouldnt be in too much of a hurry to do the nestbox thing as the budgie you have posted a picture of is still well under aged for breeding.

A coloured cere is no indicator of old enough to breed.

Thanks for the information Kaz. Hikaru is definitely still a baby. Maybe breeding is something I can consider doing next year.

Meanwhile post some pictures of front and back of both birds and we can help you identify what kind they are :)

Hi and thank you Birdluv!

Here are some more photos of Hikaru and Tsugi. Haven't been able to get Tsugi from the front, but she's all yellow there.

This is Hikaru's back (front photo appears above):

And this is Tsugi from each side. The colour (green? - I'm a little colour-blind) around the neck doesn't meet in front and seems to be the same colour as her rump. The long wing and tail feathers have coloured up as she has matured - kind of green? The spot on her left shoulder is quite prominent. There is a spot on the right, much smaller and it seems to hide most of the time.

Both budgies are from the local pet shops and don't have rings. Any idea what mutation combinations they are?
