"Splayed Legs?"

Have a look at this photo of my babies & tell me if the little one with its legs straight out is normal, it is a day younger than the other so I am hoping that it is just that little bit behind in development, BUT, just doesnt look right.

oh yes. im not an expert but have seen played legs before and that looks likea baby with splayed legs. I think you have to bind them together. Ask Hath.

Bev I think you are right on all points...The photo is too big and yes I think that poor baby has got splayed legs. But lets get some more opinions. :(

Edit: What does he look like today. Has the positioning changed?

Yes, still looks the same, but he has lots of movenment, I'm going to do a bit of ringing around today to see if i can get some opinions on how to go about this. I'm in a very small country town so I dont have access to an Avian Vet unfortunatley, but I am not going to let this poor little thing stay like this if i can help it, i will. :doctor:

I'm glad you're doing everything you cna for the little guy. Poor baby, why does this stuff have to happen? :(

Yes it does have spraddle legs. With chickens you just use tape and tape the legs together. But I would think in this case the mom would bite it off the chick so I'm not sure how to fix it unless you take the chick and hand feed it and tape it's legs together.

Bea this happens because the baby can't get a grip on the bottom of the nest box and the legs slip out to the side and don't grow right.

It can also be caused from Mum sitting too heavily, & lack of calcium. I know in future I will be using some type of nesting material to see if it does help.

I was lucky enough to get hold of a local breeder who banded both legs & we tied them together, unfortunatly the little bugger keeps slipping one leg out of the band so I am going to leave him for to-day, I dont want to inflict any more stress on him & try again tomorrow to get his leg back in, I was shown how to do this & in the mean time, I'll have to try & think of a way to keep him from slipping out.

:ausb: Good luck Bev with the banding. How high up the little fellas legs do you band them?

Im glad you have the breeder in town. Some other people on this forum might be able to help and give you some more info... :yellowhead:

thats, good, hope it all goes well :ygbudgie:

Yes all good luck being sent to you from U.K. too. :angel1:

The use of the bands just didnt work, his little legs were just too skinny, SO, I went searching through all of my craft thingies & drawers and came across a small rubber ring with a metal clamp in the middle, turns out it is one of those things that you have on each end of a chain that fits on to your glasses so you can hang them around your neck. Seemed to be absolutely perfect for the job, so with some help from my daughter we got that on the leg that he kept slipping out of the band & attatched the 2 with a fine nylon, in theory it was perfect, but little bugger slipped it,. but it was still holding his little legs together so will change the nylon for something else just in case it cuts him, still determined to try with this little fluffy thing, didnt know how fiesty they can be at that age was amazing to see him trying to bite my daughters hand (Laughing out loud). :)

I put the rings just on the first joint above his feet.
