Posted July 13, 201113 yr I did my morning check on my birds and got a glimpse of something on the eye on one of them. It was only a quick glimpse but I thought it warranted a closer look. When I got closer to him I found a large.....I don't know what it is actually. A growth? It completely covers his right eye, he can only see out of his left. Which is probably why I haven't seen it till now as he has had his head turned so he can watch me with his left eye. Its a large mass, orange in colour not unlike this. I can't use the search function as it does not like words with only 3 letters. And if I don't use the word 'eye' than whats the point. I did a quick google image search and can't find anything like it. I couldn't take any pictures because I had to go to work. He looks completely fine other than this, which is why I didn't pick it out. Anyone have any ideas as to what this might be?
July 14, 201113 yr Photos Maddie, photos! Someone will surely be able to help you then. (Won't be me, I'm purely of the pet variety, and touch wood, have been healthy so far.
July 14, 201113 yr Author Well as you can imagine its quite hard getting photos of the bird that close without having to catch him up and hold him....which i think is more stress on the bird....plus I havn't had time. But I feel the best thing to do for him is to take a trip to the vet It can't hurt right?
July 15, 201113 yr Author Well, I took Bloo to the vet this afternoon. Turns out, the orange build up over his eye was pus. He had a case of conjunctivitis/eye infection. Once the pus was off though he looked much better. He's now in his own cage with his own water dish that has some antibiotics in them. He also has a cream that needs to be applied twice a day. All this cost me $77. But the vet, despite not being an avian vet, knew what he was doing and didn't need any time at all to know what was wrong (he did need some time to get the **** off though) But he explained to me that bird pus (as well as rabbit pus) comes out quite thick which is how it accumulated so quickly. So I don't feel as neglectful as I did before After all this though, I know exactly what it is if it comes up again and may even be able to find a cheaper home remedy solution. Live and learn.
July 15, 201113 yr well done on your actions though. Once you have experienced something for the first time, it makes you better prepared the second time. Your actions in taking your bird to the vet are to be congratulated. Well done.
July 16, 201113 yr That is awesome that you took him to the vet. Now he can recuperate Edited July 16, 201113 yr by birdluv
July 16, 201113 yr Poor guy, but good work on the speedy vet visit. I'm sure he'll feel better in no time. Your vet sounds good too.
July 17, 201113 yr Author Well, uh, Bloo is doing good. However, the hen I bought the same time as him dropped dead this morning. I'm not sure what to make of this except that now my Hen to Cock ratio is dangerously low. No unusual signs on her, apart from a slightly poopy bottom. Good weight and no signs of mites or the like. I'm so confused. I save one, another dies
July 17, 201113 yr Maddie, I am wondering if the cream you got is a chloramphenicol AB (aka Golden eye ointment)? If so, it is simply a conjuctivitis ointment and you should be able to get the same at the chemist (without the vet bill) for future reference. Just make sure (if that is what your cream is) that what you get next time is the same concentration as the one you have now. AB's of any description have a limited shelf-life, so just be aware that even if the tube(?) is half full it may not be in use-by-date. Also the vet should have given you instructions on how to avoid cross-contamination to your cream. If you don't keep the cream sterile, you run the risk of introducing new bacteria to the cream which can then be passed on to the next user. Not trying to be a worry-wart, but worked in pathology, especially microbiology, for a long time, and while I have forgotten more than I remember, I do still remember some stuff!
July 17, 201113 yr Author Well I probably wouldn't use the same cream again for that reason anyway. Plus there is a huge chance that I would lose the tube so that when the problem arises I can't find it anyway lol But I will look at the tube closely and see if it is the same stuff, as the water antibiotics I could get from our club supplier no problem.
