My Birds Mutations

Featured Replies

Hi All,

Just joined and wanted opinions from the experts on my birds mutations. I bought my first English Budgie from a breeder and just wanted to confirm. He was about 9 weeks when I got him and had purple cheek patches and a pink cere. The cheek patches are turning white and his cere is starting to turn blue. He just started molting a few weeks ago. He made me fall in love with English variety :)

This is my girl I just got a few days ago. Someone brought her in as handtame so had to take her, plus she's a beautiful color, just like to know what mutation she is.

I took a few outside to get a more accurate color of her.

Thank you both!!!!

The breeder of my male told me he was a Grey Green Spangle pied. I noticed those pics came out dark. Sorry, will try to get more accurate picture. I was just curious to know, not too concerned about his coloring, I'm just starting out and wanted a nice pet, which he is;)

The hen's coloring is not accurate in the first two pics either. She doesn't look that sky blue in person. Outdoor's she looks violet/lavender greyish. Very pale chest color. I have a lot to learn about genetics though. I am still learning about Gouldian genetics and I've been breeding them for 4 years now :) Budgies are scary, lol!

Thanks again,

Rena

I tend to agree with the above answers but spangle pied does look more grey green to me. And the hen my first thoughts greywing but she good be dilute (suffused). The body colour is quite light.

If the spangle pied had purple cheek patches he can't be grey green because a grey green would have blue or grey cheek patches. The white that is showing in the cheek patches is from the spangle mutation

Hi Neville,

He did start out with purple cheek patches. Here he is about a week after I got him and I noticed some white coming through. Interesting, thanks for the info. So you'd consider him an Olive pied Spangle?

OOps sorry Neville, I didn't even look at the cheek patch ;) I should know better  I was just looking at the body colour  . But I know what you mean, but the cheek patches do look grey to me but I am half blind these days and my computer screen doesn't help much

The cheek patches are not very clear in the picture. I was going by the statement in the first post

He definetly has white cheek patches. They did start off purple though which I find strange that they would change color, but they are white now. My camera is not the best.

Thanks again for your posts.

Is it possible for his cheek patches to change again?? Now it looks like I'm seeing a light grey at the top of them? I know he's in the middle of molting. His cere is going from pink to blue as well.

Thanks,

Rena

Grey green fro me. Cheek patches are obscured by the white mottling a bit but what is showing looks more like the blue/grey of a grey green to me. PLUS the body colour is very even (where it is green that is) usually olives and dark greens are more patchy coloured than that, especially as a youngster.

Yes, when he is moulting, and growing in some new cheek patch feathers, they will look different for a while until the sheaths wear off. Then they will go back to what they usually look like. New feathers with sheaths still on them are called pin feathers. They resemble the coated ends of shoelaces. If he has enough pin feathers in his cheek patch area, that can make his cheek patches look spotted and patchy temporarily.
