How do I encourage my budgies to breed? They are both definately OVER 12 months old (I know since I've owned them since April last year [13 months ago])!

I'm 99% sure that it is a male and a female.

 

 

I have the recently bought two more adult budgies as was suggested by a friend - she said it encourages them as they are flock birds.

 

 

They currently have a nesting box, but they both seem to ignore it. The female has gnawed on the wood chew blocks and the calcium perch. Is this just beak maintance or is it mating signs?

 

The cage is 72 x 62 x 44 cms.

 

 

I do have a pet dog. Could he be the reason the budgies aren't breeding? The birds are out of the dogs reach, but he ignores them anyway.

 

 

I have also recently bought a 'show' cage which I intend to set up as a breeding cage. I will probably put it in my room (I wouldn't disturb them much as I practically only use my room to sleep). The main cage is in the family room where pets and people, and thus noise, is quite common.

 

 

 

Any suggestions?

 

 

Best to have a breeding cage with one male, one female and their nestbox and no other budgies in the same cage. A show box isnt big enough to breed in so can you clarify what you actually bought ?

They have to be in peak condition and not be moulting.

also not in main traffic of house whole so not to be disturbed when they want to mate

need sun and as kaz said one pair per breeding cage

Sorry, to clarify, I am setting up a breeding box and there are currently no budgies in it. When I only had the two budgies, I had just attached the nestbox to the top corner of their normal cage, but have since taken it down. The lady said the box was similar to a show cage (in the fact that only one side has wire and the rest is wooden).

 

I haven't attached the nestbox as yet. Below is a photo;

I have another cage that is approx 60cm wide and has more hieght and depth than the above picture, however it is completely wire. Which would be better? Or will I need to buy/ build a cage that is better suited?

60 cms wide would be better....we use breeding cages 60cm by 41 by 41

Hey Kaz, I know this isn't directly related, but I read somewhere on this forum that you need to quarantine birds. I have since been unable to find the page, could you either link me, or breifly explain why it is important and how to do it?

Food plays a big factor in breeding budgies, you haven't mentioned anything about the food you give them also the colour of there cere have you got photos of the male and female? They might not be in condition to breed.

 

Also too quite isnt good also, its best try breeding two pairs next to each other as it stimulates them to breed.
