June 30, 201113 yr Hi Daz and welcome I used to live in Tassie for around 10 yrs also. Loved it. Re cages....I made up some vertical banks using melamine, and they are on wheels. Each bank has four slots and I put wire cages in like on shelves. In this way I can pull them out and clean...worked out well for me.

Regards dazler2 Thanks so much folks for your welcomes! I am all excited because I put up 3 pairs a fortnight ago and now have 3 eggs. 2 from 1 and 1 from the second pair. The 3rd pair the female is not being receptive to the cock bird and if nothing happens soon i may have to seperate them and try again either with another cock bird or put them in a see through cage for a few days and see what happens. I have another 5 pairs to put up but still organising my cages. I purchased some double wire ones from e-bay and am impressed. Leaving all but one as large ones which gives the birds plenty of room. It means making other perches etc but I feel will be worth it. Best regards to all. dazler2

August 18, 201113 yr Author Hi Daz and welcome to the forum, how is the breeding going, any fertile eggs, well you would have chicks by. Update please. Hi there, Just came back and found your question. i have put up 6 pairs in seperate cages and have 2 youngsters in 1 & getting their feathers, 2nd pair sitting on 5 eggs, 3rd pair with 4 youngsters all with feathers and so curious:) 5th pair with 1 baby, 6th pair with 3 babies. I did post a question somehwre on here a couple of days ago about ivervectim because I have 1 bird in my aviary that has awful scaly legs and was wondering if it maybe caused by a mite or even mosquitoes? I have looked everywhere in the pet shops but cannot fnd ivervectim. I thought I also saw something they called Scatt on this site some time back but once again having trouble finding it. Would be great if someone has any suggestions. Thanking you in anticipation. Dazler2
August 18, 201113 yr Gday Dazler Sounds like scaly leg but that's not an official dignosis without seeing it, ivermectin can be purchased from the vet. In the meantime you can mix a solution of dettol or antiseptic cream that it safe to apply to the skin and 4 parts olive oil and apply it to the affected area. Ivermectin is more effective long term and you should do all the birds. It isn't recommended to apply during breeding though. Otherwise you use one of the many mite sprays which are on the market. Most are Pyrethrin based. Edited August 18, 201113 yr by fordmob

Please check some have said use Ivomectin pour on (as in cattle) Ivomectin for birds is different. If you contact a vet. some will make it up for you for birds, you may have to shop around. I got a 20 ml bottle for about $20.00 I have dosed my birds every three months, for nearly 2 yrs it does heaps of birds, 1 drop behind head. Hope this helps. Great to see you taking up breeding again good luck with it all. Sounds like you've made a good start. We like pics as well.
August 18, 201113 yr Robyn...........any advice dispensed by Nubbly re pour on ivermectin will be correct info. I believe she has done a topic on this. It is her field of expertise. Dont panic based on the info you obtained from your vet.

Dont panic based on the info you obtained from your vet. Well thanks Kaz, it's hard when there is conflicting advice around, my vet said it could kill birds if it's not the right mix , so rather than people losing birds I thought it better to warn people. I'll have to read up on Nubbly's posts to work it out further.

I did go to pinned article on the Ivomec. story from Nubbly so I have read that.

It meant I went and found the article and by posting bump on it ...it brought it up to the top of the page for you to read.

September 21, 201113 yr Author Hi ! I literally just joined about ten minutes ago ! I also used to be a breeder, but I never showed budgies, although, I wish to in the near future. Hi Charly and welcome! I am still finding my way around this site and places to post. So you are a fellow Queenslander? I am breeding a few at the moment and only allowing them 1 sitting because of the heat. Next year I think I will put them up about early May. I have a tin garden shed as a breeding room. However as soon as the weather warms up it becomes far too hot. And it has started already. How many budgies have you and are you going to breed this year? Best regards Dazler2
