Hi there

We got this little guy (Dusty is the white one) when he was 12 weeks old , he is about 6 months old now , he is VERY skittish and hasnt picked up any words , Chickee.. the gigantor blue one next to him is 5 yrs old, we got him at 6 weeks and he was talking within 4 weeks of us having him , I am hoping Dusty is a boy but the blue on his cere isnt very prominent , and the fact he isnt talking and he isnt too friendly is making me wonder, I know Budgies all have diff little personalities, but if I can get some expert opinions in here that would be great , thanks so much :)

Hmmmm ... the breeder told us he was a boy ... I was worried my chickee batted for the other team but if he is possibly a hen I can see why he gets so excited seeing shim .... I am a little dissapointed but what can I do now, I am annoyed at this breeder though .... thanks for your input.

Looks like a girl, but picture isnt that good, if you can post a closer photo it would help more.

yes that picture is of it as a youngster hasnt molted their so new updated one could be different jets right

 That's funny!

Actually, boy budgies are not particular, they will bat for whatever team they find themselves with.:D

I think Dusty looks like a girl, but by now, it seems like her cere would have started to turn tan. If she's just six months old, maybe that is coming soon, and will give you a definitive answer.

Welcome to the forum. I like your user name. :)

Thanks for all your input guys .... seems the vote is "its a girl" !!!! We got her specifically to train to talk etc as the little boys do for my partners mum .... but now thats not going to happen .... and Fin , my chickee gets amorous with anything that has a rounded shape , he particularly loves plastic spoons which he often loves then leaves !! Now we have little Dusty , I dont want to breed them , now I am not sure what to do ... will have to keep them apart :/ I am SO annoyed with the breeder !!! and here I was thinking she was just a bit "special" ....

WRONG assumption girl budgies do talk...maybe not as eassily or as readily but they do talk.

Female budgies DO talk. The simple fact of the matter is so many people keep saying only boys talk that noone bothers trying to teach females to talk. People who are so convinced a female cannot talk, will never talk etc are the very ones who wont ever try.

Quote from a budgie owner................

When I was 11 years old, my mother brought home a beautiful white parakeet. She started talking after about six months, and she was definitely a female. She talked better than any bird I've known, including my African Gray. She picked up phrases, like "Quick, shut the door",and "Uh-oh, Frosty's out!" She enjoyed dive bombing into our cold cereal, and would only bathe in a champagne glass! She was quite a personality and talker. She had a very extensive vocabulary, and lived a long life.

Quote from another budgie owner

My talker isn't my extremely smart male budgie Skyler but the handraised female Holly. When I started hearing words and phrases taken from the recording in the motion detector mirror toy( "where are you Babies" "good budgies", I love you")I presumed it was Skyler although he never spoke anything but budgie, chicken or tiel before. It was hard to make out and most words were surrounded by alien invader noise, "static" and tons of strange sounds. I finally realized the talker was Holly. I guess Skyler lets his "cell phone" speak for him.

Contrary to popular belief the female budgie will talk with equal enthusiam as a male budgie. I have handfed many budgies and have had many reports back from customers that their bird is talking whether it is male or female. "Hemsky", owned by Shea Long (one of our future veternarians), is a budgie I raised in the past year and Shea just emailed me to tell me Hemsky's vocabulary now consists of: "Pretty, Birdie, Budgie and Hi Cutie". Shea also adds that Hemsky is "a very smart little girl", always entertaining. Hemsky is only five and half months old.

As long as people continue to say females wont talk, then noone tries to teach them Its just another one of those OLD WIVES TALES.............saying that they dont when they do.

thanks for the info Kaz , I have been repeatedly trying to teach her since we have had her given the fact I thought she was a boy , so I have put the time in but she hasnt picked anything up , I have only gone by what I have read and heard that only the boys talk so yes I was ignorant where that's concerned, but I will still keep putting the effort in in the hopes she becomes more tame and hopefully talks one day :)

Not all budgies talk anyway.......no matter if they are boys or girls. I hope Dusty does :)

You also don't need to separate them either... don't give them a breeding box or anything that looks like one and they wont breed. (good work on the photo too)

but if you want her to talk best to seperate so she has only human company

and will crave your voice and want to mimic you

with another bird it can happen but really less likely to as she wont need two talk as she will b contented

SO TRUE :D two budgies and you may as well give up now ....

Awesome , once again thank you so much guys , I do want to try and get her to talk , I will keep them separated but occasionally they have a fly around together , I feel bad for her cause if chickee had the chance he could populate Australia with budgies if need be ... I just dont want him to harass her too much ... she is such a cute tiny thing, either that or my chickee is an unusually big buzzard !! here are a couple more pics , the cockatiel whos name is Charlie found us ..... he flew onto my partner while he was on the balcony , he bought charlie in then he flew off only to come back again 3 weeks later !! he is GORGEOUS and gets on well with the budgies .... if only people could do the same ;)

for some reason picture didn't upload in last post .... will try again

I'm sorry to say, but Dusty is female.

At least you choose a uni-sex name for her though. ^_^
