I was sent a link on a German breeder"Florian Böck" from a friend and he uses this herb mixture in his soft food, I assume it is commercial made. Other Countries are far more advanced than we are when it comes to additives and vitamins for budgerigars and caged birds. Here in Australia there isn't much available specifically for budgies, most of us use pigeon and horse products etc.

Just wondering if any breeder here has used anything like it.

basil, oregano, thyme, sage

1 heaped tablespoon for 1/2 kg soft food

Not a breeder Splat, and haven't tried the mixture but the birds are quite happy to nibble on fresh basil and garlic. Those are what I have fresh, so haven't tried the others.

splat their are a few herbs very beneficial to our birds as are some native plants

for many reasons

i give mine herbs but mostly things like water cress and mint

you can give a whole garlic clove if you like

they will eat it if they please

i know they love dill and fennel but i dont give them that however im just starting my budgie garden this spring comming it will have lots of stuff lemon grass fresh coriander basil most things but all will be giving within reason

but wont be in soft food will just be of bush

Gb I have parsley growing and Greg grows garlic, we did have a thyme bush but Greg pulled it out last year.

 

Parsley is growing wild in our back yard. so I guess if I buy some basil it may take off too.

well they love parsley to just anyone beware you must thoroughly wash any fresh food very well in water first before giving

Especially bought stuff from supermaket, will have sprays and snail bait etc, kill birds in NO time.

I do buy silverbeet from supermarket when my supply runs out which is NOW. And I put it in a bucket of water and let it sit for few hours , sometimes over night and they get it first thing in the morning. I wash any vegetable I give my birds but I wash veges I buy for much longer.

Splat, I'm not sure how harsh your winters get. Parsley will re-seed itself and sprout new in the spring, if you let some of it go to seed. Must be why you have it growing wild. But Basil is an annual, so it will die over the winter. But maybe it doen't get that cold where you are?

 

I gave my birds fresh sage I had growing, but I can't remember if they liked it much, or just left it. One of my chick buyers was telling me about a dried herb supplement you just feed by itself in a dish, and they dig into it or not, depending on their nutritional needs. I'd have to ask her for more info on that. Looking at what you wrote above, it sounds like you could just give them those four dried herbs right from your cupboard.

Yes that's what I was thinking but there might be more or less of one or the other too.

Hi Splat, as you know I grow all those herbs, but would need to know the exact benefit to my birds before I

fed them herbs. I have some books on herbs for humans, thats why I grow them, but I'll have to research

welcome and yes it made me realize maybe i should just go with my thoughts on what my birds need not what others do or say as my birds were at their best when i was feeding rice touch of saffron and veggies cooked in it mashed spud with nutmeg in it eggs scrambled with oregano and sprinkled with tad fresh chilly not only was i eating better as i was cooking for myself as well but birds were in peek condition cant forget the Sunday lunch roast cooked in lemon lime sprinkled with chilly and rosemary and squeeze of orange stuffed with hurbed bread crumbs (mixed herbs ) in which the birds got the fresh carcass and left over stuffing straight after lunch was eaten

along with any left over baked veggies as i don't use oil or anything in my cooking

makes me wonder why i stopped ..mmm thats right i was told that birds dont get than in wild

I think there are a heap of things we feed are birds that they don't get in the wild.
