Why Don't They Lay Eggs?

Featured Replies

Posted

They are over 2 years old, but don't lay eggs though mating.

They just like biting the nest, and don't like to stay inside it.

It seems like that they enjoy playing with toys while not interested in breeding.

Do they think the nest outside is dangerous to lay eggs in?

Is it too much fun to play with toys to breed?

They do mate, but don't lay eggs. Why?

These are things I've learned by reading on how to breed em

1. Are they in breeding condition??

2. Are they moulting?

3. Do you have cuttlebone and mineral block ?

4. Do you think they feel safe where you have your birds setup?

Another most important thing is to be patient birds or any other pet are not machines you can't force them to be breeding and laying eggs when you want, just be patient

A lot can be acchieved if you post a photo of the cage and breeding set up :)

hello Hans

firstly

you have some very beautiful birds their

secondly

can i ask

how do you know their age

did you breed them yourself

reason i ask is that the violet spangle hen looks to be quiet young still 6 months maybe

and the grey or mauve cock also

secondly i did not see any breeding set up their

just cages with birds-and some with more than two birds ??

also the bird flying loose its split rec pied but not only that (just thought id tell u that )

whats it doing loose?

its disturbing all the other birds

can you take a picture or video (photos are better ) of your whole breeding cage set ups and the birds your trying to breed

and post

id like to help you

but i need to know following

how you know age of birds

where you got birds

where do you plan to breed them

(inside ??/outside ?? )

and does that bird always go about flying everywhere around the others ?

how long you been trying to breed them now

what do you nests look like

You can see the nest briefly in the second video GB, just a few glimpses.

Those birds seem to be a bit on edge because of that loose one.

Also, you didn't specify, but is it ALL of the pairs that aren't laying eggs? Or just one.

How much sunlight do they get during the day?

How long have there pairs been together with a nest box?

Breeding cage set up is like the picture above. several toys are added to the left.

The violet & the grey are under 1 year.

2 year old birds are on the second floor to the right.

Nestbox is fixed outside the cage like the picture above.

I know their age since i got them from a petshop as chicks.

The bird stay inside the cage most of the time.

they breed in the cage.

I recall you posting this photo once before...............they do seem to be vulnerable like that. Maybe its a feeling they have......being vulnerable and not feeling safe. Any you want to breed shouldnt be out flying free. They need focus.

Only 1 pair is 2 years old.

The other 2 pairs are under 1 year old except 1 male.

Anyway, none of the pairs aren't laying eggs.

Sunlight is enough because cage is located by the window.

They have been together with a nest box since they were young.

okay mate im going to sugest something totally off bat here

but i think it may work

seems to me your birds don't benefit from sun anyhow so

do you have a room they can be placed in total darkness bar a uv light (you would need to buy but one tube is around 40.00

you just plug it in and hang it

also

try hanging breeding box inside the cage or even sit it on floor of cage if you think you could access viewing better their

bird that wants to breed wont care where the box is so long as its their for her

make sure you give calcium in form of calcivet liquord to fix lack of sun and breeders solivet d for vit d as your birds would not get vit d through the windows

so need it

try turning lights on from 600am till 930 at night then pitch black till next morning 6am so on

place a small radio in room thats turned on contently

softly but so you can hear it this why birds will have a content familiar sound around them at all times even at night just make sure its low leavel listening so as they can sleep still undisturbed

also no bird under one year should be in a cabinet with nest box (but i think you know that )

also wheres their seed

i know if i was going to rase a family i would want to make sure i had enough food at all times to be-able to feed them

so i suggest a take away tub filled with seed dayly so they feel that food supply is sufficient

if you are unable to try this let me know and ill try come up with another option

:)

ps your birds looked very healthy good job

The picture was taken before moving to a new place. Now the birds can't see the outside view partly.

if birds have had nest since young they may not see it as a place to breed

try taking them away for two months

and do not put in with the birds under one year old

its not fair on them or the chicks

okay so this is not the set up now ???

as you have moved

can you take a new up dated picture please

looking at old ones does not help

we need to see exactly whats happening to help

or we are wasting our and your time

I'm a little too busy to take new pictures. I will post new pictures later.

Thank you very much.

if your to busy to snap a few pics you can be guaranteed you'll be to busy to care for chicks in nest and all that goes with breeding even one pair

so

i think ill just leave my comments out of this thread from now on

good luck and

maybe just remember its not often birds will breed inside

they are like gold fish in that way

other fish will breed indoors but not gold fish they need the direct moon light

budgies well they need to feel the environments right

in which yours must not be i personally think its their window view

your fairly high up must have loads of noise around their also

or none at all being that height

either is not good birds wont breed needs to be a consent familiar noise level

good luck with it

they are well kepts that i can see

I agree with everything GB has said.

I asked how much sunlight they get as budgies need 13 hours of sun to get into condition. Its how they would tell the right season in the wild.

I think they may feel a bit exposed in the setup you have. Its like if you live in a glass house, and everyone could watch your life.

Not to mention the constant movement they would see outside, not knowing what it is or whether its going to get them or not.

I recall you posting this photo once before...............they do seem to be vulnerable like that. Maybe its a feeling they have......being vulnerable and not feeling safe. Any you want to breed shouldnt be out flying free. They need focus.

Here is the topic where Hans has asked all these same questions before. Old Topic

And I agree with GB, if we ask for a photo of your set-up so we can help you tweak it and make it better, it is an absolute waste of time to get us to comment on a photo of what your set up is NOT like!

People are happy to help, but will usually give up if they feel like their advice is not being considered. Have you done any further research on breeding budgies since you started having these problems 8 months ago?

No noise,it's to quite.

No noise,it's to quiet.

and too quiet is a sign of danger to birds. It makes them fearful and apprehensive.

Wow, the old post is almost exactly the same.

If you are still having trouble breeding them Hans then there is obviously something wrong with your setup and you should follow as much advice that is given to you

  • 1 month later...

Take out the breeding box and put it back in 2 months as GB suggested and you will have eggs :)
