Posted May 27, 201114 yr I have a few questions, any HELPFUL/ POSITIVE criticism welcome Im not a full on budgie breeder, just a little hobby type thing at the moment. I have 4 budgie. They were all in the same cage at first with a twin nesting box, They are paired up.. The first pair Laid 2 eggs and then the Hen got very very protective and was almost killing the other hen that was in the cage... So i split them into seperate cages with there own boxes.. (right thing????) The hen that had laid 2 eggs (2 days apart) didnt lay anymore then 2, and started kicking them out of the little concave bit in the box, i put them back, and she did it to both of them... im thinking someting was up so i candled the eggs and both looked infertile too me, it had been about 8 days now. So i got rid of these eggs. ( right or wrong???) Im really keen to get some babies, its such a learning experience for me ( im only 18) if ind it really fun though Any informaiton please, and also will she lay more eggs for me, they are quite bonded and i catch them mating all the time.. will post picture of the pair, and the eggs when she had them..
May 27, 201114 yr You did the right thing seperating them into their own cages. On e male one female and one nesting boxes per cage. She most likely tossed out the eggs due to the fight and the changes with the cage and nestboxes. For you to change from a double box to a single that would have meant anew nestbox and that change they dont like once they've begun to lay eggs. Most eggs look infertile until around 5-6 days. If you are new at candling you may not have seen the signs. Give her a chance to settle and start over. budgies are over 12 months , right ?
May 27, 201114 yr Author Yes budgies are about 2 years... I didnt change the nest box for the pair that had already laid the eggs, they kept the same twin box and only used one side of it. i looked with the torch and all i could see was yellowness, no veins and it was 8 days onwards, she laid one egg, then had a fight, then i moved the other pair and she layed the other egg, 6 days onwards she started kicking the eggs out and acting strange so i candled the eggs. The are the 2.. bad picture Thanks KAZ for your reply its very helpfull. love to hear more
May 27, 201114 yr Good move on separating them... people have lost budgies due to similar circumstances, even with a nest full of chicks! As long as they're all in breeding condition (there's some information on here with how to tell this, or get some clear close up photos of their cere's with out using the flash, and we may be able to help you) I'd leave the next boxes in with them and let them try again. I'd also be inclinded to leave the eggs for longer before throwing them out. It's sometimes hard to see the early signs of a fertile egg, especially if you haven't see them before. Also, being new to breeding, we have lots of awesome information on the forum about breeding, foods to feed while breeding etc, etc, etc... When I first joined BBC I learnt so much here, and still to this day I learn new things. Read, read, read and ask questions if you're not sure. Welcome and good luck!
May 28, 201114 yr Was the hen sitting on the eggs? The life inside an egg doesn't start to grow until it starts to be incubated, which is usually when a hen has laid about 3 eggs. They won't go bad if you leave them a little longer, and its better to be safe than sorry. If a hen moves the eggs from the concave its okay. Hen have to move the eggs around so that they aren't on the same side all the time. Also, they regulate their temperature by putting the eggs out from underneath them every now and then (unless its super cold) Also be careful when touching eggs with your bare hands. Because the shells are porous, bacteria can enter the egg and potentially damage a developing chick. Just make sure hands a clean or wear some clean gloves if you feel you have to touch them.
May 28, 201114 yr Author she had stopped sitting on them all together. one egg was on the ground of the cage
May 28, 201114 yr Give her a chance to settle and start over. The disruption she has been through and the start off by colony breeding is reason enough for all this. Let her settle down and she will start again later on.
