Posted May 26, 201114 yr Hi Members, Just signed up and I have a question about my new budgies 4 of them 2 males & 2 females.We have just built a new avairy outside and I was told from the man we bought 3 of them from that they require shell grit as part of their diet but have also read that this can make budgies sick. I am trusting that there are some excellent breeders that can give me some good advice as I would not want to harm these birds.I am not a breeder . Many thanks, Sandy.
May 26, 201114 yr There is a lot or disagreement about grit because an American study found that grit could cause impaction problems and they maintained that hook bill birds do not need grit because they hull the seed. This study was done with gravel based grit not with shell grit, which is the grit that is used in most countries. Shell grit is fully soluble in the gut so it cannot cause problems also it is one of the best sources of calcium available for our birds. Most breeders in this country use shell grit regularly

May 26, 201114 yr Welcome to the Forum, I also use grit, I give my birds a choice, they have on offer , True grit from vetafarm, abgrit which is 100% calcium, Phill put me onto this one and the birds love it, I also have just normal Trill grit from the supermarket and I have just started offering them health grit from the Australian pigeon company. Geoff has being using it and his birds go nuts over it.
