My budgie hatched her eggs

Well as you may or my not know after waiting several months I finally got one pf my 3 pairs to lay eggs. She laid a total of 7 eggs and she hatched the first on Monday (5/9/05) and the second on Wednesday. The third chick is due today. The only weird thing is when she hatched the second chick there should have been 5 eggs left in the nest to hatch since she laid 7 and only hatched out 2. Well she only has 4 eggs left in the nest. I checked in the cage and everything and I couldn't find it. I also haven't even seen a shell from the ones she hatched so I'm assuming she ate it. The only conclusion I could come to as to where the egg went is that she knew it wasn't going to hatch and she ate it as well. I did notice that one of them did get a dent in it but it was small and I was hoping it would still hatch. I don't know if the egg with the dent is the egg she ate or not. I didn't touch the eggs to see if the it was the dented one she ate or not.

When she hatched the first chick I was checking in on her about every hour to see if she was feeding it or not. Well I didn't see anything in the chicks crop for several hours. But I let it go a little longer and a little while later I heard the chick making noise in the box and both parents were in the box and when they came out I checked and she had fed it or the male did but I know now the female is feeding it because I hear the same noises and the male is outside of the box and she seems to always come out of the box after she's fed them so I peek in and it's got food in it. This time when the second chick hatched she fed it within the first hour or so of hatching. So all is going well and I'm very excited. I should have the rest of the eggs hatched by next Thursday.

I'll have to try and get a picture of them in the nest box if I can remember to take one.

WOW!!! That's so exciting! The little ones are very loud. I read though that the louder they are the fuller they are? Seems odd, like them screaming for mum to stop feeding. Can't wait for pictures! ;)

YAY glad to hear that all is going well with the new babies.

Yes the mother feeds the young for the frist while then the farther starts to help with the feedings.

When I came home from school (around 12:30ish pm EST) the third chick had hatched and had a full crop. I forgot to get a picture till just now so I will try and get one tomorrow. I'm going to have to write myself a note to get one. My memory isn't that great and I'm only 18.

I went to the pet store Thursday to pick up some fish and crickets and I was looking at the budgies and I saw 6 of them a wanted. 2 whites, 2 yellows and 2 that I didn't know what color they were but one might have been a rainbow. It was soooo pretty I couldn't stop thinking about the one and tomorrow I'm going back to see if it's still there so I can buy it. It's too bad they are $16.99 USD each or I had more cash so I would buy them all.

They are so friendly, one of the yellows was trying to get out of the cage to get at me so I could scratch it's head. The other yellow came over to the side of the cage so I could try and pet it's side and it held up it's wings so I could scratch it's side, it's closed it's eyes and just enjoyed it. The only thing is with him is that it appeared it got spraddle legs and it wasn't corrected 100% because it's legs were kinda wide set. But it flew and hoped around like normal.

I can't wait till tomorrow to get the new birdy. I hope it's still there. I forgot to see if it was male or female, not like it really matters. Well I'm going to bed now so it comes faster (Laughing out loud).

Well done and congratulations

The hen feeds the chick crop milk it's white isn't it? the dad will start to feed them when they are older.

Don't forget to post a pick soon. We love picks. :D

I went to the pet store and I was waiting on the guy to open up and the little darling was still there and I got him/her. I'm not sure if it's male or female yet. It's very young still and has bars on the head and everything. I think it's going to be a female. I named her tweety. I did take a few pictures of her but they didn't come out right so I dumped them. I also took some pictures of the babies but I don't know how well they will come out. I think they will be too dark.

Also the crop milk is yellowish in color.

okay here is a picture of my baby budgies, It's not the best picture but it's better then nothing....

Notice how the one shows how an unhatched egg makes for a great pillow. Plus today one of those pillows is now a chick.

:ausb: Cute bubs what does mum and dad look like?? :yellowhead:

Mom is white with like 2 small spots of violet and dad is yellow with a green rump and some green around the legs and some black on the head and wings.

I think the breeder was trying to make a all yellow bird with a green rump with the male. His brother looks almost exactly like him and it's very hard to tell them apart unless you have them out. One is named chewie who chews on everything and the other is trouble because he's alway getting into trouble.

I have some bad news. 5 eggs hatched and the 6th was due yesterday. Well in the morning before school I checked in on them and the egg had a hole in it and the baby was making it's way out. That was around 7:00AM EST. Then around 1:00PM after I got home from school I came home and checked on them to make sure everything was okay as normal. Well when I opened the box and the newest one had hatched out but was dead in the bottom of the nest so I took it out and it wasn't beat up or anything and then I turned it over and I noticed it was full of yolk which told me it died soon after hatching. So I really don't know what happened to it. I thing it was stepped on. With mom, dad, and 5 older brothers and sisters it would be hard not to get stepped on. But I still have 5 other happy healthy chicks and the oldest one is a week and 2 days old now and I can see it getting yellow pins on the wings. I can't wait to see what the rest of it is going to look like.

Congratulations Nasal-tufts on your bubs it sounds like you are doing a great job.

Well done.

(Laughing out loud) I'm really not doing anything. Mom and dad are doing it all. They are really good parents. I read that the mom was to stay in the nest and only come out a few times to use the bathroom and then go back in. But she was coming out all the time to eat and drink and I thought she was going to be a bad mother. Also I read that she wouldn't let him in the nest box at all and the two of them spend most of their time in the nest box with the chicks. I'm so proud of them. Now only if his brother and his girlfriend would get down to business.

Isn't it great when you get a good pair. Razzo and Budgie were my star parents, never let a baby die. :) Can you post some more pictures of the babies? :)

clap.gif Well done Nasal_tuffs. I know Mum and Dad do the hard stuff but have to set it up right in the first place.
