Posted May 25, 201113 yr Gday guys, I bought a few new birds a while ago to restart the thrill of breeding again sometime in the future. I've been drying to determine a few mutations, and there's 3 birds that I'm not too sure about. Just hoping that someone can enlighten me a little further with what mutations they are. First bird is a cock. Im guessing cobalt opaline greywing?? Second bird is a hen. A grey spangle greywing, or just grey greywing?? And the third bird is a much younger hen. She is skyblue, but it's very diluted, so maybe a skyblue spangle clearwing?? And finally is a a photo of the all together, that shows the colours in comparison to others. Cheers!
May 25, 201113 yr These are just my opinions, I am no where near expert The first cock looks like a opaline cobalt spangle clearwing. The first hen looks like a violet or mauve dilute (she doesn't look like a spangle to me) The second hen looks like a sky spangle clearwing. Someone else will be able to give you a definite I'm sure
May 26, 201113 yr Author Thanks guys. Hopefully I get some nice chicks out of the first two older birds, they're getting very lovey at the moment. Also, just a couple of questions to help me understand it a little better: For the first hen that you think is a mauve dilute, how can you tell whether it is a mauve or a grey?? To my (untrained) eye, it just looks like a grey.. And also, with dilute, what rules out a greywing or something similar? Is it because the wing markings are more pronounced.. Isaac
May 26, 201113 yr Gday guys, I bought a few new birds a while ago to restart the thrill of breeding again sometime in the future. I've been drying to determine a few mutations, and there's 3 birds that I'm not too sure about. Just hoping that someone can enlighten me a little further with what mutations they are. First bird is a cock. Im guessing cobalt opaline greywing?? Cobalt opaline spangle greywing (mottled cheek patches and wing markings indicating it's also spangle). Second bird is a hen. A grey spangle greywing, or just grey greywing?? Just a grey greywing or maybe dilute I THINK. Struggling to see the cheek patch clearly and not sure if I can see the rump patch that is evident in many spangles but the wing markings on their own suggest a normal. Does this bird have any white/silver in the cheek patches? If so then spangle. If not then normal greywing grey. Grey has grey toned cheek patch (as this bird does) Mauve would have violet cheek patch (as this bird does not). The disctinction between greywing and dilute is often a bit hard. Dilutes have (as the name suggests) diluted colour all over however the original greywings had 1/2 intensity body colour and they still do pop up. I'm 50:50 on this bird and maybe RIP would be the better one to tell us. And the third bird is a much younger hen. She is skyblue, but it's very diluted, so maybe a skyblue spangle clearwing?? Spangle sky greywing or dilute not clearwing. Grey markings and diluted body more indicative of greywing. Clearwings are more vibrant body colour and when they do have grey markings the are a bit more wishy washy and fuzzy. And finally is a a photo of the all together, that shows the colours in comparison to others. In this last picture that greywing grey maybe spangle looks to have the rump patch indicative of spangle but I'd need better pics of both cheek patch and wing markings to give a better answer. But from here the wing markings look like a normal dilute or greywing. Cheers! Edited May 26, 201113 yr by nubbly5
May 26, 201113 yr nubbly is very good with the greywing/clearwing/dulites so trust her for sure for that grey greywing (2nd bird) I can't see any signs of spangle in the wings, to me they clearly look normal - also the tail is coloured not white. Edited May 26, 201113 yr by *Nerwen*
May 27, 201113 yr Author Thanks guys. I was of the opinion that she was also a grey.. Here are a couple more pics I got, that give a little bit more of a closeup of her rump and cheek patches. Also, could you have a guess as to how old you think she is? I bought her as an 'adult budgie' a month or two ago, but she does seem a bit younger than the cobalt spangle opaline greywing male that she's pretty friendly with.
May 31, 201113 yr Yep grey and not a spangle. Think she is wuite young. Looks like she's just been through her first moult judging by her cere, still patchy head striations (some young feathers still in there and they are slightly lighter than adult feathers) and iris rings but what that means in actual age..... maybe 4-6 months old but I'm guessing.
