Finally found an albino boy !

It's taken a while but I finally found a breeder at jimboomba who has a young male Albino cock bird to pair up with my Albino hen Tinkerbell.

I'm so excited. We are picking him up this weekend. She said I can have a look at her aviary and set up. I can't wait as she has won a tonne of awards including Nationals.

Also... drumroll... I finally have my first pair down in a cabinet. They have finished moulting and were getting seriously lovey dovey. I was a bit worried about the season, but they are indoors so I figured it should be okay.

Sparkles, opaline recessive hen, and Cosmo, dominant pied green/gold have been smooching madly and rearranging their nesting box for days. I'm like a kid at christmas waiting for our very first egg. I haven't bred budgies for years and I'd forgotten how much I loved it all.

This is Sparkles and Cosmo... any ideas on what the babies may look like??? I don't really mind as I don't intend to show... yet. I'm sure the bug will bite at some stage but I am no where near ready for anything like that. I'm happy to be a clucky budgie Aunty.

Well all depends on what the birds might be split for.

If cosmo is split for blue then you have a 50% chance of blue babies, if not - all green/blue.

If comso is split for opaline then you'll get some opaline cocks and hens, if not then all cocks will be split for opaline (from sparkles).

If comso is split for recessive pied then you have 50% chance of recessive pied and as he is a dominant pied you have 50% chance of dominant pied. So IF he is split for rec pied then you have the chance for some combo pieds.

All the babies will be light green or skyblue (if cosmo split for blue) - no dark factors.

Other splits are possible too with cinnamon being a strong possibility - you'll get cinnamon hens if cosmo is split for cinnamon.

If your birds were not split for anything at all the results would be:

All light green split for blue.

50% chance of dominant pied 50% chance of normals.

All split for recessive pied.

Ummm... what is a TCB?

Got our new boy. He is huuuuge and gorgeous. Camelle showed me around her aviaries and I wanted sooo many birds. She had a selection ready picked out to go to national selection and they were soooo amazingly gorgeous. She had this stunning grey spangle that I just fell in love with....

Sigh!

I'll try to get a picture of our new boy when he settles down a bit. He is such a good looker.

:) :) :)

Tcb = texas clearBody

I dont know much about tcb's but does not look like one. I quite like the tcb mutation and will have one if i should come across one

Cool! I am just looking at my new boy's pedigree papers.

Dad = sky blue/imo (won pine river & wynnum)

Mum = Albino (won sexlinked ABS show)

His great Great Grandma on Mum's side was texas clearbody opaline grey (1st in Brisbane NS) back to Eric Davis and his Grandad on Mum's side was Abino 100% tony Luxton National Line.

There is a whole lot more info on his line here if anyone is interested I can put it online?

It was amazing to listen to Camelle.

Is it just me or is Sparkles a TCB???

Might be the frosting throwing you there Ratzy. She's not a TBC but maybe a dutch pied???? Although I'm definitely not the expert there. In preference and because I'm not really sure I stuck with rec pied in my initial reply.

The markings on upper wings are much darker on TCB's with frosting appearing closer to the flights. Also body colour would be reduced or would be suffused closer to the rump.

He looks nice, it might be just the photo but does he have red eyes?

I don't think so, are they are very dark. He has faint markings too. His dad was a Skyblue/ino split and Mum was an Albino from a long line of champion Albinos (he's got a pedigree paper which is amazing to read).

He will breed ino babies, which is what I was looking for. The hen I have him with is a red eyed albino who is snowy white.

He's a lovely big boy with English bloodline and such a relaxed quiet sweetie. He was in an aviary of all males, and when we put him in with Tink he couldn't believe his luck!!! Was funny to see him show off almost straight away. He obviously likes her, although she looks a tad bewildered. :)

No quarantine?

I once had a lutino cock who had such dark eyes, that I couldn't tell they were red. But he did throw red eyed chicks.

I kept him aside all day and watched his poos and behaviour. He came from a National winning show breeder and she told me as long as his poos were normal (and she had been watching him too) then it would be okay. Her aviaries are immaculate.

Pet shop birds, definitately!!!!!! No brainer on that one. :)

I really can't tell what colour his eyes are. But I figure I should trust such a breeder. His pedigree is all albino and albino splits right back to great grandparents. She said without a doubt he will throw ino babies.

His brother was going into selections today I think :)

Well, Tink and Percy are still eyeing each other from opposite perches... but at least they look more relaxed! It's only day two together and they are both maidens, so fingers crossed on the bonding.

What colour is the cere Moglet?

And what colour is the ring on his leg? :)

This is incorrect information for quarantine procedures and certainly not what you should be listening to.

When stressed a disease thats carried and not showing symptoms comes out.

Stress is........

being caught

being sold

being moved

new home

new food

new friends

new relationships to sort out,

new home and breeding

Fabulous. I thought I was doing the right thing. I should have listened to my gut feeling. Hopefully this time it will be okay. He is bright and healthy and is separated in a cage with just TInkerbell. He hasn't been in the main avairy at least.

His cere is pinkish purple with very faint tinged of blue at the outer edges. His band is blue and he was hatched on 05/01/2010

I just had a good look at his eyes and they look either very very dark plummy red or black. Without peering at him with a strong light I just can't be sure.

Still cross at myself.

I agree with Kaz, and I would also add, if she keeps her aviary that immaculate, it's possible that her bird might not have built up a lot of immunities to things, so normal germs that your own birds carry might be more detrimental to him.

But don't be cross with yourself. You listened to her advice because you trusted that she wouldn't steer you wrong.

I think its good that you didn't put him into the main aviary yet.

Just don't give them a nest box until the normal 30 days or more quarantine period is over, and by then he should be over any stress from moving etc.

Percy is very handsome. I know quite a few breeders that will put a new bird down to breed straight away as they say this is a good way of quarantining. If there is a problem, you will only lose the other bird, not your whole stock :)

Thank you guys. We are sooo proud of him! He's our first really good bird and we are so excited.

Percy and Tinkerbell are now sitting on the same perch (albeit at opposite ends!) but both look relaxed about it and are just grooming and acting natural.

Tinkerbell is a really shy girl, and there is NO way they are getting a nesting box until I can see them really bonding. I don't want to stress either of them out any more than they have been.

It will take as long as it will with these two. I wanted to get Tink out of the main aviary asap, as she was being chased around by both Gilbert AND Whizzbang the Terrible. She must be coming into season.

On Saturday morning, Whizzy had her bailed up crouched underneath the water bowl that is fixed to the side of the aviary. He was in full song, head fluffed up and bobbing away wooing her and the poor girl was totally cornered. Possum would have just chomped him and moved out, but Tink is too shy, she was just looking so miserable and stuck! We call Whizzy the Howard Wallowitz of birds.

At least Percy is a whole lot more gentlemanly and doesn't seem to be doing the birdy octopus thing with her. He seems happy to sing on his perch from the other end.
