Hello

I was just wondering if veneer on top of chipboard is okay to use for making a cabinet of breeding cages? I am looking at makes a set of 6, and I really don't want to start from scratch. It isn't possible to paint over veneer is it?

We have a cabinet here, and if I divided it into a bank of 6, the measuremnts would be 15 high - 23 wide- 11 deep. What do you guys think?

They will breed in it Squeak, they will be wide enough, but no quite as high & as deep as i would prefer. You can make a comparison with the picture i suppose.

Thanks PJI. I am still contemplating it. I don't really like breeding cages that are higher, just a personal preference. Just trying to imagine if it is worth building a whole cabinet for a few extra inch's..... but they would be much happier as well. The nestbox is on the outside as well. I would make a divider for the middle, so that when the birds have finished nesting and the clutch's are out, I can open it up. I will also open it up if there isn't a pair on the other side, I will only have it full for the peak of the season. Lots of things to consider, aye?

I notice you are in Adelaide Squeak ,i am not sure if there is a "Mr plywood franchise" there or not.If there is, or a similar plywood dealer they will usually do all the cutting for you,so basically all you have to do is take it home glue, screw, sand & paint. This one cost $350 for all the plywood supplied and cut, note:> this was a special order to fit into a particular space,i could have actually got it made wider for the same price. If you like i can send you a copy of the plans via pm.

Our local Mitre 10 is pretty good with that. Those plans would be great, if possible. Does the cages you built have a place for a tray to go?

I use metal trays, and find them easier then vacuuming, because my cabinet will need to go outside. On that note, doesn't plywood warp ?

Ask at your hardware store about paint to go over veneer, I am vary sure you can buy some. Normal paint won't work it just scratches off because I have tried it.

Those are some really nice cabinets PJI.

Thats what I hope mine to look like when I get my dream bird room lol

Also, mentioning the name of the place you get your wood has led me to a search and have found a store not 25 minutes from my house.

But, like squeak asked, does it warp? Or is that only with moisture? (I guess that would make it strictly indoors cabinet)

If your in a giving mood, do you think you could share your plans with me?

I can't do anything with them now of course, but having stuff like that would help me to design my own when i get to :)

No it doesn't warp, but that said mine are inside and have three coats of paint.Regarding the trays all you have to do if you look at the picture above "those front boards" just get the supplier to skim a bit off the bottom of each one & that will give you the gap you need for the trays.
