Posted April 30, 201114 yr I now have 13 budgies! 8 are in quarantine right now with a cockatiel. I got them all at the bird fair, and thank you Hilly for those three beautiful cocks and all that gear!!!! I have all of their ages down, and no breeding for at least 4-6 months . None of them are over a year old, which is fine. That 'greygreen' spangle cock I think Hilly said was violet green I think? I'm fairly sure I know what most of them are, but help is appreciated! And HUGE thank you to member Hilly for giving me all this!
April 30, 201114 yr first looks to be rec. pied. in the second picture it goes, YF Grey Spangle, Violet Spangle and grey cinnamon (opaline?). Third picture looks like a grey-green spangle to the right, and a light green spangle opaline in front. The last is of a TCB Opaline Light Green. Whoever clipped their wings did a horrid job! I am glad you bought all you birdies, having an aviary is fun fun fun!
April 30, 201114 yr Author Thanks I thought rec pied too but she has irises, but I didn't have a better picture. Confession time - I actually did their wings . That's how I was told to do them lol.
April 30, 201114 yr 1st picture – dark green dominant pied 2nd picture from left – yellow face spangle grey, spangle cobalt violet, cinnamon grey 3rd picture from left – can’t see properly, cockatiel, need to see wings but probably opaline spangle dark green, spanglegrey green 4th picture – opaline clearbody
May 1, 201114 yr Thanks I thought rec pied too but she has irises, but I didn't have a better picture. Confession time - I actually did their wings . That's how I was told to do them lol. Ratzy, that's how I clip my birds' wings, too. There always seems to be that slight triangle of feather showing, but I purposely make sure I don't clip them too short. Mine can still fly, albeit a little slower, and closer to the floor, so I can catch them easily, without chasing them all over.
May 1, 201114 yr first looks to be rec. pied. how on earth could you mistake this bird for a recessive pied ?
May 1, 201114 yr first looks to be rec. pied. how on earth could you mistake this bird for a recessive pied ? Um I don't know, maybe because it is a pied bird? I can't see it's iris' , and I am don't specialise in pied's or anything. I was only having a guess. Ratzy, no offense or anything On the rare occasion I do clip my birds wings, I normally do them longer, that's all! At least you did them with sharp scissors and their not all ragged and patchy? Also, is the cinnamon grey in the second picture a cinnamon or not? Just wondering Edited May 1, 201114 yr by Squeak_Crumble

I just don't want them escaping from the quarantine cage, so I cut them a bit shorter. And that is a cinnamon grey Thank you everyone for the mutations! PS - Clipped birds are fine in my aviary. My other cockatiel is clipped and is doing well. And the budgie behind the cockatiel ( I think ) is an opaline TCB dom pied cock. Edited May 1, 201114 yr by Ratzy
May 1, 201114 yr Ratzy, whatever the mutation, it is a pretty bird. It is a shame someone didn't give you good info on trimming their wings (even me as a pure amateur can see it coul be better) but a little research next time can probably show you the correct way (or an "expert" on the forum). Enjoy your new birds for what they are and not for what someone else tells you they are!! Edited May 1, 201114 yr by **KAZ**
May 1, 201114 yr That dom pied as i understand it the patch on back of head, clear flights and what appears to be the bar of green a ross body gives it away
May 1, 201114 yr If you want some practice identifying different pied types try this thread http://forums.budgie...20%20pieds&st=0
May 1, 201114 yr That dom pied as i understand it the patch on back of head, clear flights and what appears to be the bar of green a ross body gives it away also the symmetry of those markings across the wing butts and as you said lack of colour through the flights
May 2, 201114 yr truly beautiful birds the dom pieds hey that yellowface spangle grey in the 2nd picture I thought was a Y/F spangle violet
May 2, 201114 yr Very pretty birds as for wing clipping - I bought a pair of hair cutting scissors(small pair) at my local dollar store they're only to be used for wing clippings nothing else(so they stay nice and sharp) also We cut at an upward angle so the wings lay against the body well and you don't see what was "clipped" it took us a while to figure out how many flights needed trimmed for what we wanted- still able to fly, but can't get height from the ground, and can't stay up for long periods of time - I've never lost a bird or even came close to loosing one our "magic number" for our Budgies and tiels Is 5 Meaning we cut the 1st 5 flight feathers on each wing and we get the outcome we want, Anything more they drop like a brick, anything less They'd get away - But each bird is different so it is best to only trim 1-2 on each side and let them fly and test it to see if where you need it to be. This is a picture(older couldn't find any really good wing pictures) of a couple of our budgies who were clipped by us - first 2 on the front perch then the green Opaline in the back (the light green on the end is fully flighted and was just a baby) (I did re size the picture not sure if it took effect - photo bucket usually messes my pictures up when I re size them - one reason I don't do it)
May 3, 201114 yr And the budgie behind the cockatiel ( I think ) is an opaline TCB dom pied cock. That bird (one behind the cockatiel) is in the background of this shot too, do you have two TCBs??
May 4, 201114 yr how do you know a dominant pied is TCB?? do some of the flight feathers have colour?
May 4, 201114 yr Author Honestly, I don't know, I'm horrible with mutations, but that was what the breeder told me.
May 5, 201114 yr oh i see - the breed would only know because they know the genetics of the bird. (eg ino masking spangle)
May 5, 201114 yr Author Or it could have been a dud breeder I showed him pics of Chubba Chub's green tail and he told me he'd moult out of it lol, even after I'd told him he was 15 months old and had already had a few major moults and a few minor ones. Ha ha, the other breeder I spoke to told me he'd never grow out of it and it was just a throw back gene ( that's what all mutations originally were, weren't they? ). That cock was in a cage with three other TCB's ( no other mutation ) and when I look at it I just think TCB. I'll try to get better individual pics over the weekend.
