daisy my hen has two eggs now that she is sitting on and being very protective of them.

i postd before about her tossing her eggs. and someone mentioned that they might not have been fertile. so does that mean these are. is there any way i can check. cantwait till they hatch! :D:):D:D:D

you can 'candle' them by holding them upto the light and you should be able to see faint lines appering if they are firtile but clear if they are not, im not sure when you can do this though, sombody will be alond with the answer soon :)

anyway CONGRATULATIONS

I am not sure but I did it close to their due date but you can do it before - if you see veins through the egg when you shine a tourch through it they are fertile - but if you leave it later you will actually see the baby moving and even hear it - but be warned she might kick the eggs out if they have your scent on - what i did was take some of the debris from the base of the box and rub your fingers together with it - yukky but effective!

I found the above info out by doing a search on egg candling - there is another method of floating and sinking in water but I am unsure about that because it is more for the incubator eggs and I figured it wasnt a good idea

Hope this will help sorry if it does'nt

wow that is so cool, if i ever bred i would love to see them moving around in the egg!, but i would restrian myself i would hate for anything to happen to the baby budgie.

you can try the candling for about day 5 I believe but if this is your first time don't throw them out if you don't see anything then, for you just may be wrong. It will not hurt the ma to sit on empty eggs and may keep her in the box sitting correctly for the soon to be egg following these two.

Good point - I have a female sitting on three eggs and I am just leaving her and the eggs alone - I know they are infertile but she had such a hard time laying them I have left them and her to learn and give her a break before she tries laying again - although I am counting 24 days just to make sure!

If you have other budgies in a aviary they can tell as well because mine were all trying to see in the box before my dumpy hatched - which leads me to believe they heard him tweet tweet!
