Posted April 20, 201114 yr Hey everyone. My mum found me a cage today that I am going down to look at tomorrow for Dalek. It is four times bigger then the cage I have him now and is small enough to still fit in my room, Because I have a very small room and space to have Dalek, I can't actually have a rectangle cage, so the extra room has to be made up in height. To buy the cage is going to cost me nearly $65 a huge amount of money to a student with out a job living in the country. The problem is the cage is like this one: http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_pnX4lVTOOmk/S3P-sbe4KWI/AAAAAAAAAdk/B4hzmW3D62Q/s320/Canary-Cage.jpg (please ignore the fact it says canary cage I promise the cage i'm getting is huge LOL) The thing i'm worried about is the dome in the roof. They have a perch coming down from the roof to take up the dome so the birds can't hit themselves on it. BUt i'm still worried that it will hurt him. The space that it has is just amazing compared to the small purple cage he is in at the moment. (See my other post on this topic to see the cage if you would like.) I don't have the mesurments because my parents couldn't get them because the shop assistant didn't know. The reason I am wondering is because I am going down tomorrow, they only have one left and i'm not going to be down in the shopping area for another week after tomororw due to Easter and that. Do you guys think it would still be worth it even with the dome in the roof?
April 21, 201114 yr The bar spacing on that particular cage look too big. Go no bigger than 12mm bar spacing. Shaped tops are a waste. It makes them look bigger than they actually are.....there is wasted areas that arent as usable as you would hope. No point hanging a swing in that area if it cant be flown on to and swinging on it hits the sides. At least with a flat top you can put a budgie playgym on top.

I went to look at the cage today and completly fell in love with it. It is absolutely perfect for my space problem and also to give Dalek heaps of room. I'll be putting some photos up after i've moved everything on my desk and set it up. LOL So much for using a desk for school work. It's now taken up by animals. The dome on top of the cage is extremly large and has enough space that Dalek can easily fly in to the swing and then get out again. There are four food containers each with a lid so that the bird can not get out of the hole while you change it. It also came with two wooden perches. It also has a pull out tray for easy cleaning. The only problem that I have found is his toys are going to be to small for this new large cage as they were brought for a small cage. Looks like i'm up for more toys. LOL I'm not even thinking of moving Dalek in to the cage until I know he is 100% healthy again because I don't want him to stress about moving cage and that. At the moment he's still a little sluggish and has a slight touch of the runs which is clearing up. He hasn't lost his appatite much to my relief and he is also still chattering to his bell. I'll give him a few more days before I decide if it's safe to move him. For now he'll stay in his purple cage.
April 22, 201114 yr Author okay, so I decided to take some photos of my brand new cage for Dalek and hopefully his future friends. The first photo is his old cage near the new cage. Now the new cage isn't set up right and still needs to be cleaned before Dalek goes in to it, but I just decided to take these photos today while I made sure it would fit on my desk. LOL Once again, not putting Dalek in it for a few more days until I know that he is fully better. This is the cage by itself: This is the dome roof. I was pretty worried about it until I saw just how big it was LOL. These are two of the four feeding/water dishes. I love the lid on them, because it will stop him from spitting his seed out. LOL I'm not going to use all four food dishes, because he is one of these budgies that eat as long as there is food in the cage and not just because he is hungry. LOL And lastly is the swing in the dome roof that came with the cage. All in all I am so happy with this cage, and I know that Dalek is going to love it. And I also won't have to worry and freak out about him being in a small cage. Which really was a horrible thing for me, to see him in such a small cage. I still need to put his toys in it, and get a few bigger toys, because his are only for his small cage LOL. And I will be using the purple cage as a quarantine cage for the new bird that I decide to get to give Dalek a friend. I have joked with my mum and dad that instead of putting Dalek in there i was going to get a few cockatiles, and their answer is not one that I can write on the internet. LOL! Apparently noisy birds are not something to put in a small cottage style house.
April 22, 201114 yr Hi Jabberwocky. Just a word of warning regarding your feed dishes. Sometimes birds can escape through these by pushing the lids up. I know they sort of clip down but if the bird is inventive and/or determined they will push through. A way around this (I had found) is to tape them down from the outside (I used packing tape, the wide stuff, as it is esy to peal up and will seal down again a number of times. when changing their seed before needing to be replaced, rather than say sticky tape). The other thing is, if you get yourself a young bird to put in with Dalek, sometimes a yound bird will try to nestle down in the seed container - in fact they wil almost fold themselves in to fit!!! Not all try of course, but some do, and speaking from experience, it is quite scary looking for your bird in the cage and not being able to find it!! Then to see it scrunched up in the seed dish. I doubt that Dalek would try to, it seems to be young birds trying to replicate a nest. Hope that helps and am sure Dalek will enjoy more room to play!!
April 22, 201114 yr Looks FAB!!! You said the bar spacing is 10mm, that's great... but just check where the rounded sections of the cage are, this is where the bars can differ a little. Other than that, I'd swap all the crappy perches they supplied for natural branches, different thickness' if you can, and running back to front. So much bigger than his other cage, he's going to love it! Can't wait for more pics when it's set up!
April 22, 201114 yr Author Thank you both so much. My mum was already planning on getting me to stick down the lids for the food dish, and also to take out the two food dishes that I'm not using so that they don't decide to nest in them. Though it might be slightly funny to see how an earth they would manage it. LOL I'm just waiting for the weather to clear up a bit, because it's raining here at the moment and then i'm going out to my grandparents farm and getting some branches for the cage so that they are natural and will trim his toes and that. Is there any trees that they are not allowed to have? We have gum trees and eucalyptus out at the farm, I was thinking of also putting some eucalyptus leaves in his cage to give him something else to play with. Is that alright for him?
April 22, 201114 yr The gum and eucalyptus branches are great. Have a scout and see if you can find ones of different thicknesses, and with nubbly bits on them. If they've still got bark on even better to chew on. They like to scratch their heads on knobs as well as talking to them in my bird's case. A small cage-size branch and leaves is also great for the cage. Just give it a really good wash (I put some cheap white vinegar in a small low tub of water and give it a good swish around and soak, then rinse.). You never know what wild birds or possums have being doing on it.
April 22, 201114 yr Hey, Jabberwocky, just to come back to the cage for a moment, when you remove the seed dishes you aren't using, don't forget to still tape down the lids (to the cage)as they can still be pushed up. It's not so much the young birds trying to nest but rather trying to replicate their previous enviroment where they felt safe and secure. So not to worry about trying to nest in the way we would normally talk of nesting as in laying eggs. Does that make sense? Get as may branches (eucalypts) as you can fit into the car!!! (Just kidding)! But seriously, the more the better because then you can rotate them week to week or whenever you clean the cage so it is not always the same setup. I have a number of different shaped, sized, thicknesses etc and also different varieties, so that while one set (from the previous week) is soaking/being cleaned the next set is in the cage. Also leave on some smaller branches and Dalek will in short time whittle them down to whatever he can't manage anymore. Also the rough bark of things like bottlebrush are great too, for their feet and their beak. Some parts of my bottlebrush perches are now as smooth as though I had sanded them, just from the budgies constantly chewing the bark off. Here's to some good weather for you - it's Easter, we always have some showers at Easter. How about you? School holidays?
