Posted April 19, 201114 yr Hello I am very new to this forum. Could you please help me guess :-) if this baby budgie is a boy or girl (about 1.5 month old handfed). I know the pictures are not good but this is the best i could do. THANK YOU VERY MUCH Alla
April 20, 201114 yr Hi, do you have any clearer pictures looks like a boy to me but some clear pictures would help. Edited April 20, 201114 yr by **KAZ**
April 20, 201114 yr Yep, that's a beautiful little bouncy boy. Lovely colours from what I can see from the photos.
April 20, 201114 yr Author Any other opinions? The second picture shows his cere really pinkish-purplish, but this is not how it looks in person. It is really more blue maybe purplish. I know everyone here says that any white is the girl. He has some really light right around nostrils, but i can't tell if it is white or light blue right. Also, his cere is not translucent. Does it mean that it is a girl? I will try to get better pictures when i go visit him/ her. He is not weaned yet, so not ready to go home. Also, does it mean anything that he is laying down with another bird right on him in the corner under the lamp or they are just very young? How do i make sure that he is healthy? Thank you Alla

Thank you Alla For a girl, you don't look for just ANY white, you look for overall whitish. Any budgie could have a paler color around the nostril area. That's what I think yours has. He has what looks to me like a normal boy colored cere, with a little bit of paleness around the nostrils, which doesn't detract from him being a boy. NOW, if you were to say that that lighter area is REALLY white, and covers most of his cere, then I would say,"Well, then it sounds like it could be a girl." I'm trying to read between the lines here. Are you the one hand feeding them, or are you buying him from the person who is doing the hand-feeding? Oh, I see where you have said you are going to visit him, sorry. To make sure he is healthy, I guess it comes down to how much you trust the seller. Look around, see if the place is clean and the other birds look well. Ask questions. Is there any reason why you would be doubting his health? If so, then I would look elsewhere. I think it's normal for the two to huddle together. Under the lamp seems like the most comfy spot. What I can see from your photos seems good. I hope this helps.
April 21, 201114 yr Author Thank you, Finnie Here is another picture i did today. What would you all say??? Thanks for any input Alla
April 22, 201114 yr Author Kaz, thanks for the advice. Here he/she again :-) This is the MOST realistic picture: and couple more: PLEASE, tell me what you all think now??? THANK YOU All Edited April 22, 201114 yr by Alla
April 22, 201114 yr The cere is a little ambiguous. Could go either way. If theres white on the cere like we are seeing I would say female.
April 22, 201114 yr Author Thanks Kaz for getting back to me quickly. Well, I don't see white-white, it is more light blue-ish, but cere is not translucent at all. We are getting a budgle-pet and really want a boy... I can't find handfed budgie - waitlist everywhere. I thought it is much better to get a handfed one, right?

Whitish cere with pale blue is female. pinky purple is male. If thats what you are seeing then does that explanation help at all ? If theres no white its a boy
April 22, 201114 yr Author I got this idea from looking at posts here, but this one is not the "clear case" :-) The cere is not pale at all and only right around the nostrils it is pale blue (like you see on the photo i marked most realistic). We are not taking him/her home for another 10 days. I guess, i'll be patient and see if it changes or is it too early to change?
April 22, 201114 yr Alla, if these people see a hen, it's pretty likely it's a hen. They are pretty good at their stuff. Me. I don't know what sex it is. But she looks cute nonetheless.
April 22, 201114 yr What colours are its brothers and sisters maybe you can compare there ceres and usually female whith those ceres im seeing the female has a brighter colour, most of my budgies i've breed the ceres are exactly the same as your photos they are really hard to tell if male or female so i look at there colour and 95% of the time i'm right. Yours looking at its cere and colour looks like a Boy, just my opinion.
April 22, 201114 yr Author Here is another budgie-sibling available. It's cere looks pinkish-purplish but pale and with thin white ring around at least one nostril. I thought it is a girl. No? This one is handfed too but very shy and really scared of my hand. Cere is more pale in person then on the picture. Edited April 22, 201114 yr by Alla
April 22, 201114 yr the one you labeled most realistic to me looks like a girl but in the next two it looks like a boy Usually(not always though) Males are more of a waxy bright pink color with it being more transform in color(meaning no break up in color its all smooth and one color) Females at a very young age like this one tend to have a more Pale pinkish cere with out the "waxy" effect and theirs isn't as smooth in color I also noticed the lil one is getting iris rings already (last picture ) I think they are so cute when they have a head full of baby bars and Iris rings If it helps any here are pictures of One of my babies from a few years ago around the same age as the one your asking about - This is 100% Female (I still have her) http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y29/RednecksDoItBest/The%20Birds/Budgie%20Pictures/StormNapping.jpg http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y29/RednecksDoItBest/The%20Birds/Budgie%20Pictures/Storm-2-1.jpg a different one around the same age she was also a girl http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y29/RednecksDoItBest/The%20Birds/Budgie%20Pictures/Cinnamonopalinefrombelleandsky-2.jpg If the cere of the one your considering in person looks nothing like the above then Its probably a safe bet to say its a male Edited April 22, 201114 yr by K&M Breeding
April 24, 201114 yr The new photos you posted look a little more henlike to me, but your description still sounds male. You know, girl budgies make good pets, too. And the one you started this thread with seems pretty friendly, so it might not matter whether it is a girl or a boy. If it is not hand shy, and you like its personality, I would go for it. And keep in mind, even if it starts out friendly, it is up to you to keep up with his/her taming, and ensure that it develops into the companion you are wanting. Just being a boy doesn't automatically guarantee its outcome, that is up to you.
