Posted April 14, 201114 yr Hi everyone, Just wanted to start a discussion about the Demand and Supply of Budgies. Especially English Budgies. On the weekend i was a seller at the Geelong Bird Sale, selling mainly finches. I had a quick walk around all 125 sellers tables and i was surprised at the lack of Budgies for Sale, of the 125 Sellers i think there would of been 3 or 4 people selling Budgies and only 2 of these had any decent sized Birds for sale. Compare this to the last 2 years of Bird Sales i have been to where there were lots and lots of Budgies for sale. Are good Budgies becoming harder to find and buy? I recently decided to increase my stock from 8 pairs to 16 pairs. I have had so much trouble finding decent birds, i must say i am not a member of a budgie club and i do not know any club breeders. Talking to other people as well and i have heard the same comments from them. Open for discussion.... Wayne
April 14, 201114 yr Hi Wayno, Even if you are a club member it can be difficult to source decent birds. I live in Tasmania and good breeders are very scarce, and the ones with decent birds prefer to send them to the mainland auctions. Pet shops don't want the bigger birds, so all they carry are mite infected aviary bred types. No wonder the hobby is in decline when you can't even but half decent stock to get started with. Cheers, Twist.

Wayne Wayne, Iwas there,I was the Steward on the back door, this year there were more Budgie sellers, there then other years. Now I did't get to see any birds, till after the Crush, & you could move around. But I did notice there were a few lots of Bush Budgie there. A bit of bad luck but the Geelong Club was going to run a sale at the Show Grounds, next Sunday. But most of us are tied up with other things on.So well have our Sale day in December now. PS what type of Finches do you breed.

April 14, 201114 yr I find the bird sale here in Shepparton is much the same, I went to it a few years ago and there was only one breeder selling quality birds and a few other tables selling tiny crappy but pretty colour budgies but guess what what the small pretty colours sold and the better quality types didn't, I did buy 2 from the breeder because he was only selling them for $20.00 but you see the other tables were selling there midgets for $10.00 and I think that is the difference. Since then I have never seen a breeder there waisting there time, I would never sell there because by the time you pay for your store it is a waste of time and money. Maybe that is what the breeders in Geelong think too. I know that most people go to those bird sales to buy a variety of birds more than budgies. As for clubs and breeders, believe me there are plenty of us around. There is a Geelong club, Mountain District, Dandenong. Here is a link for you to have a look, maybe you can find a club near you and give them a ring, they are only to happy to put you on to a breeder near you. http://www.bcv.asn.au/Clubs.html

Been in the club before Macka, and I know most of the breeders. I am coming back into the hobby, which I had to leave due to family health reasons. I have rung around and nobody has anything at the moment. One breeder will be culling in July and another in August. Another sent birds to Mainland auction last week. In the whole of Tasmania there is 9 open breeders and 8 intermediate breeders and quite a number of novice breeders, of which most are just in the club to get rings. So as you can see, not too many budgie breeders. I have already contacted half af them so its not from lack of trying. Also I don't think there are as many culls around these days. And like I said before, most of them are sending birds to the mainland auctions. Wish things were different but that's how things are here. Cheer, Twist.
April 15, 201114 yr This is the wrong time of year to be after culls, most breeders wait until they put their birds down and then cull what they don't use, which mostly would be July. Like now my birds have gone into their annual moult and I guess I will have to wait until late June or July to put them down now because I really don't want to breed over winter. So just be patient.

PS what type of Finches do you breed. Hi, I also saw lots of Bush Budgies. Would be great to come to the Budgie Sale, where can i find the date of this when it is decided upon? I just found there were not as many club breeders there than in the past. Going to Bendigo in a few weeks and they usually have a few. I keep a lot of finches, mainly the common ones, Been back in the hobby 3 years now and i'm now just deciding on what birds i'm going to keep in the future. These include: Parrot Finches, Blues, Reds and Tri-colour, Gouldians, St Helena's, Stars, Painteds, Parsons, Double Bars, Fires, Green Singers and a couple of others. I also love my budgies and now have about 10 pairs again, but looking at buying a few more pairs.

Twist if your are in Lonnie then you have not contacted me Had a heap of birds took them to animal tucker box and am sure if you approached the breeder that sent birds to the auction in Melbourne last week heb would have certainly helped you out as hes has helped us with quality birds at recently at a good price actually 80% of my bloodline is from this exhibitor.
April 15, 201114 yr I agree most breeders are willing to help, but you must relise that they will not sell there best birds BUT if buy from a breeder that works on a blood line his lesser birds will have the gentics to through some good. Like here I do not sell any thing visually good except for the bird Kaz got but then at the time I didn't relise what I had. I do NOW. But I am happy Kaz for you to have him. just hope you are getting good offspring from him.
April 16, 201114 yr Not in Lonnie Taz, Down south mate. Got a few birds from A.home and T. Philpott. which is a start. Only contacted 1 breeder up the North who is culling in June/July. I don't mind waiting for cull time, just would prefer not to look at an empty aviary. Not looking to buy their best Splat, but it has to have some visual quality.
