Posted April 10, 201114 yr Ive confused myself silly over this one. I think she was sold to me as a female but the more i look at her the more i think mabye she is actually a he! I havent had budgies for a very long time (been out of the budgies for atleast 10 years!) and im out of the knack of sexing them so your help would be much appreciated! He/she is also a funny colour, white with a blue sheen and cinnamon lacing on the wings - not sure if that will help with sexing
April 10, 201114 yr Looks like an albino male but if he has cinnamon on his wings he is probably a lacewing. White birds often have a blue sheen
April 10, 201114 yr Author Thanks Neville, I thought that may be the case i was assured it was a female but looking at cere colouring i had a little niggling doubt, The hubby bought home two new budgies for me today so now i have four in my aviary - i know one of the ones he bought home is male but perhaps you could help me out on the other one (was sold as a female). This is the cinnamon lacing on the back and wings of the white budgie in the first photo just for interests sake If ive got four boys well i guess id better start looking for four girls in nice colours to join the flock - not that i intend to breed anytime soon but if i ever decide to atleast then ill have some pairs. Cheers for your help so far
April 10, 201114 yr Author Well that is dissapointing if that is the case. I suppose some people will do anything just to sell and make money. They werent cheap budgies either at $38 each from a reputable bird shop (probably the only reputable one in perth) I was told the two i got were a female and male pair and the hubby was told the two he bought were a male & female pair *sigh* Looks like ill be looking for four pretty females if the yellow is a male too & i wont be going to bird dealers any longer to buy.
April 10, 201114 yr to me both white ones look like girls the Yellow is male and recessive pied the 2nd white one are the markings Grey or brown in person? I can't tell in the picture If its Grey then its a grey wing not a lacewing
April 10, 201114 yr Author The white ones are the same bird K&M I hope she is a female The markings are a cinnamon / very pale brown colour and extend over the wings and across the back and make their way up over the back of the head too.
April 10, 201114 yr Hi and welcome The Albino or Lacewing looks male to me too. I can't help with the mutation - I originally thought Albino, but if it has markings, maybe it's a poorly marked Lacewing? *shrugs* I also think the pied is male. I notice you're in Perth - so am I It's a shame the petshop got it wrong, but that isn't anything unusual when it comes to petshops. Alot of the time they do get it wrong. There are some that are spot on, but there aren't alot of them.
April 10, 201114 yr Author Hi Amy, I notice there are a few perth people here! I got them from a bird dealer in perth who assured me the white was a female and did the same to my partner for the yellow bird, it was the owner of the shop who markets himself as having over 30 years of experience so i thought i would be able to trust his word on sexes but perhaps he doesnt have all that much experience with budgies afterall Well it looks like i will have to start looking for some nice girls to join my flock!
April 11, 201114 yr Try remembering this golden rule when choosing budgies................... Young males have pink ceres. Young females have a lot of white on their ceres. Slightly older males have pinky purple ceres tending towards blue when past 5 months only IF they are a mutation thats cere will turn blue. A recessive pied male or albino males cere will never turn blue.....so assuming a pink cere in a bird of this mutation is a wrong diagnosis. A female over 6 months will have a cere tending toward brownish. You will get far more accurate sexing of birds here than any pet store in perth no matter what they class their experience. If you want good birds and correct sexing go along to the Metropolitan Budgerigar Club at their meetings in Bassendean Community Centre, Old Perth Rd Bassendean.................next meeting is 23rd April.......come at around 10am. Members bring in birds for sale. Show bred birds but you will get correct advice on what sexes they are from people who do know. Edited April 11, 201114 yr by **KAZ**
April 11, 201114 yr Hi! I just wanted to jump in with a reminder about quarantine. You said your husband brought two new ones home today, so now there are four in your aviary. It's important to keep the new ones separate from the old ones for at least 30 days, to make sure neither set has any illness they could pass on to each other. You mentioned that they all came from the same shop, so if they were all bought within a close time frame, and had been together before anyway, then it's all okay. But if it's been a long time, that shop's newer birds could have something the older ones didn't have. And you would definitely be wanting to quarantine your future hens, when you find them.
April 11, 201114 yr Author thanks everyone for your advice so far! Its much appreciated and very helpful! Kaz thanks for the info on cere colour ill try and practice so i get the knack back! Finn they were out of the same aviary in the same shop and bought within two days of each other so i presumed they would be okay as they are the birds that i was thinking about buying on the same day as the first pair. Normally i quarantine for three months with new birds in the set up here as we have some birds that are too valuable to lose if we dont quarantine =)
May 5, 201114 yr This site is SO great for trying to improve our knowledge...please excuse my silly question, but am I right in thinking that if the white bird was an albino it would have the red eyes?
May 6, 201114 yr okay you have a lacewing cock bird id say it could be spangle markings why its so faint as the cinnamon is quiet dark takes good year for laceing to sometimes turn up on lacewings but its a lacewing either normal or spangled a closer shot of its back i could definitely tell you you have a light green rec pied cock bird and perequito albinos have red eyes the double factor spangle does not remember also no question is a stupid one its how we learn if you get any cobalt hen to pair with the lacewing cock you will get a lovely mix of chicks all boys will be split lacewing all hens will be lacewings in blue series the rec pied will give you all chicks being split rec pied as its rec gene as were lacewing is sex linked enjoy your birds
May 7, 201114 yr Sorry GB not spangle. Badly marked Albino or poorly marked Lacewing. And definitely a he - Arrowdane, many people who don't really know will get the albino and rec pied males wrong. Prequito, the white boy does have red eyes.
