Help With Clipped Wing Budgie Going Into Aviary?

Hi everyone.

I seem to only be coming on here for advice. Guess that is what you do when you are a noobe.

We got given a young hand tamed budgie from a friend. Saphire is his name and there are pics on another post from me. Only been bought from a shop the week before. It was only slightly trained and Jess, my daughter, is only 9. She wanted to keep him separate from the aviary birds as a tame budgie. I slightly clipped his wings to stop him from flying too far in the house. He can't fly up but can flutter safely to the ground from a height.

Thing is Jess has lost interest and we feel sorry for him being alone in the cage. Also common for noisy miners to torment him. So I want to put him in the aviary with the other budgies. Should I wait till he gets his flight feathers back, or can I put him in now?

Thanks for your help.

Hi Robbo,

Everyone with aviaries must have missed this question. I only have what is called flight cages, which are about 5 feet wide, and 3 feet tall. But from past experience, I won't put a clipped budgie into my flight cage anymore, until I know it can fly. So I would assume it might be the same in an aviary. The budgie I had a problem with could climb the wire to get up to the high perches, but then when something freaked her out, instead of flying, she would crash to the floor of the cage.

You said your budgie can flutter down from a height, so I guess you would have to judge whether that is sufficient for when it tries to jump off of your aviary perches. Sorry I can't be more help. :)

I would wait till your bird moults in its new flight feathers :)

Thanks Finnie & Kaz.

I was able to find an answer to my own question in some other posts I have been reading.

We have decided to keep Saphire out of the aviary until he moults. This is due to Cheeky being an agressive bird. Cheeky has been responsible for killing 2 quails. Had to modify an old dog kennel to keep the quails in. So for Saphires safety best to keep him out till he can fly. Pity Jess isn't as dedicated as we thought. Saphire is a great bird. Hops up onto you finger, sits on your sholder. Runs around the house like no ones business. Maybe she may get enthused again before he moults.

Cheers

Jess is only 9 and that age they rarely keep the enthusiasm or responsibility going for pets. Sometimes takes till mid 20's for that to kick in.

How about you keep doing what you are doing as if the bird is yours....tame it and train it. .....after all.....most of us on here started being into budgies as adults.

Maybe somewhere along the way when you are succeeding more with Saphire, Jess will start being more interested. Even still maybe Saphire is yours rather than Jess's :D
