Scalyface Budgies

I have found one store local to where I now live that I wont be buying anything from after a visit today. Its not in the same town but a bigger town nearby......Bunbury.

They have budgies for sale at this produce store. At least four of them had severe scalyface....to this degree and worse.

These arent photos of the actual birds but similar to the two that werent quite as bad as the other two.

Two had beaks grown all out of shape and size to the point they would struggle to be able to eat.

I brought it to the attention of the guy in charge. He said he knew about it and was treating it. I asked him what he was using as it was extremely advanced. He said lotion every now and then. I said what about ivermectin..............he reacted in horror...."Oh no....he wouldnt be using that" I told him I was a show budgie breeder and had the ivermectin treatment at home and would be happy to bring some in and treat his birds for him for free.

His response....he said he was a show budgie breeder too and he knew what he was doing and didnt want any help.

I believe that to be a lie about being a show breeder.

My impression was he was lying about treatment, the lotion doesnt work when its that advanced and the birds all needed beak trims after treatment with ivermectin. They were in a for sale cage with other budgies, the others not looking all that crash hot either.

What does this teach me ??

I wont be using that store for any pet products based on the attitude of the manager and the birds he had there suffering.

That's horrific. CAn you report him to the RSCPA?

In my previous experience with reporting this kind of thing to the RSPCA.........they are a toothless tiger and nothing is ever done.

Bad news travels faster than good so you make sure you never buy from them and you make sure you advise others not to as well.

Oh my god how could anybody leave a budgie in that state! And its reasonably easy to treat too! Poor wee souls!

That is just Terrible and that's keeping my thoughts "nice and clean" because What I'm saying to my monitor isn't so nice and clean

people like that need to have the sense beat back into them because its obvious they have no sense!

That's really horrible, i had two show budgies my 1st ever show budgie pair with mild scaly-face and right away i got online did alot of research on how to treat it, and Kaz helped me out alot by telling me to use SCATT right away i went to my local petshop where i found the product and started treating it, now my two budgies are doing great :) , its just common sense if pet shop owner or pet owner sees a bird that doesn't look how its supposed to, to start treating it right away and try to find out why its sick

Oh my god that is the most horrible thing i've ever seen! O_O!!!!

I think i've been lucky with living in the country, because any problems with the birds in the pet shops, they go back to the breeders and get the treatment. We had scaly face in our aviary, and after much freaking out by myself I calmed down and searched out. We couldn't get the stuff you told me to get, but I managed to get something else and took them out and put them in a hospital cage and treated it.

Because our house is so small I ended up with six budgies in my room. xDD Lovely wake up call.

I am horrified to read what you said about the RSPCA, because here they are really good, and if they don't help then someone else will. I have seen people buying the bad budgies just to save them and get them treated.

We had one bad pet shop half an hour from me and the birds were horrible, after a few months he got his stuff together and now all his animals are perfect and well fed. He got a large batch of budgies brought in from a breeder and also more medicine for them in case any get anything bad. I was amazed to see how much someone can change by just being willing.

If only all pet shop managers were the same. :( I hope someone buys those budgies and give them the life they need and deserve. If I was there I know I would buy them.

Quite frankly..........buying them isnt helping them. :(

It isnt rescue. It teaches these places that no matter whats wrong with them they will sell them so it gives them a basis for taking any standard of budgie from a seller because there are the PITY BUYERS.

Buying them creates a market for them.

So we need to let these birds suffer to show them that it is wrong to treat them like that?

Complain, report, talk and soon their business wont have customers and then they will have to do something.

Figure it out.......if a pet store always has people/customers who buy the cr*p birds, the sick injured and infirm ones.........doesnt that send a message to the petstore that they dont have to buy in the best stock. they can pay $3-5 a budgie and get cr*ppy stock and the public then get these dregs.....anything will sell no matter what they look like or how healthy they are or arent.

Supply and demand. If the pity buyers buy them anyway then petstores staff will continue to buy them in and stock then regardless of condition.

I offered this guy free treatment of his birds...........his arrogance and lies about the birds tells me he wont be helped. I guess I will be reporting him next.

When you say it like that I understand completly where you are coming from. And as bad as it seems, I do see your point. :( I just hate to see animals suffering.

I understand how you feel, Jabberwocky, it seems sad to leave the sick bird there. But I have to agree with Kaz, because "rewarding" the shop owner by buying up the sick bird just condemns the next bird that comes into that store. And the next, and the next, and the next. So you might be able to save one or two, but you enable them to harm many many more birds. Better that the shop owner learns that mistreating birds loses him money, so he will stop. Yes, the first few birds suffer, but hopefully it ends sooner.

Kaz you should name the petshop, I imagine bunbury would have more then one petshop

those severe mite pics are so bad

RSPCA are too busy being a political lobby group to be bothered doing any actual prevention of cruelty nowadays!! They wont get a cent out of me!
