Posted April 5, 201114 yr Possum looks grey to me, but then when I look at other's images of grey birds I see she isn't. I'm a Graphic Designer and I would have called her a Cool Grey rather than a Warm Grey like the proper grey birds look. Around her tail is very dark definitely grey tone, and when I'm allowed a closer look I see she has very feint purpley blue tinge underneath her tail area but it is not prominent at all. I am still a bit confused between the difference between the whole Mauve/Violet/Grey classification idea. This is Possum (she's a bit of a fatty at the moment).
April 5, 201114 yr A mauve will usually have violet cheek patches and a dark blue tail A grey has either blue or grey cheek patches and a black tail. There can be a lot of variation in the shade of grey between birds. If a bird is both violet & grey the shade of the cheek patches and the tail can be effected making identification difficult Edited April 5, 201114 yr by Neville
April 5, 201114 yr If a bird is both violet & grey the shade of the cheek patches and the tail can be effected making identification difficult Neville, what is a bird is both violet and mauve? Is that equally as hard to tell from violet and grey?
April 5, 201114 yr Author Hmmm. Her tail is white mostly. She has a white patch on her rump starting in the smaller feathers then just about all of the long tail feathers are white. I think just a few shorter tail feathers underneath are sort of not quite black more a deep grey. But not many. The rest of her tail is just white. All her long wing feathers are white too. The feathers around her vent are kind of mauvey tinged light blue, tinging to quite an irridescenty blue/mauve/purpley colour right at the very end of her body feathers behind the vent. The dots on her face are black, the cheek patches are deep blue. Sorry about my tragic bird description... She is really pretty and I am quite interested to know what she is and why. She has paired up with Whizzbang (T2 yellowface cobalt something.... (I'll look it up again!) I hope they will have gorgeous babies in spring when she is older. This is so interesting. Thank you. YAY!! Some one knows what planet I am on at least!!! She's a Pantone 429 C!
April 5, 201114 yr using the WBO colour guide. (http://bestofbreeds....colourguide.htm) it appears that mauve matches her colouring. the coloured lines are: Cobalt Mauve Grey Violet Edited April 5, 201114 yr by *Nerwen*
April 5, 201114 yr Author Way cool!! How does the colour chart thing work? Is that a standard breeder thing?? using the WBO colour guide. (http://bestofbreeds....colourguide.htm) it appears that mauve matches her colouring. the coloured lines are: Cobalt Mauve Grey Violet
April 5, 201114 yr If a bird is both violet & grey the shade of the cheek patches and the tail can be effected making identification difficult Neville, what is a bird is both violet and mauve? Is that equally as hard to tell from violet and grey? Grey and violet are both colour adding factors so the birds will always have an underlying shade of blue. Your birds cheek patches are not the right shade for a bird that is just mauve but they are a deeper blue than is usual for a grey. This could mean that she is a violet grey or she could be just a grey with brighter than usual cheek patches
April 5, 201114 yr There you go Moglet. Looking at the Budgie Colour Chart Nerwen supplied, they do use Pantone colours as a guide. The Pantone colours just get renamed as official Budgie colours.

April 5, 201114 yr Author The PMS connection is weird!! Official budgie colours... what a cracker. I have been known to take my PMS swatches to Spotlight at times.....! Lucky they don't have a PMS 185 budgie match... I'd be worried!!!! Well, now I know I have a beautiful Mauve pied girl.... who needs a good personal trainer!
April 5, 201114 yr that would be pretty though kaz can wip one up lol shes good with photo shop pitty im not as would been quiet fun to do in that colour :}
April 5, 201114 yr used the 654 number. I'm not saying she can't be violet grey - as personally I've not seen one in real life and that is how i can notice differences in colours the best. I'm just using tools to show the best match to her colour. i used this colour to tool on pictures with my own birds ages ago. Moglet it is a colour picked to state what is the colour aimed for in showing by the World Budgie Organisation. (check out the link) edit - teehee I love your new "pink" hen. This could mean that she is a violet grey or she could be just a grey with brighter than usual cheek patches I think what Neville is saying here, is that she could be grey AND violet, on any shade of blue? Well, here is what I think. You want to pair her up with Whizzbang, right? So I looked him up, here he is: He looks like a Golden face Sky Blue, to me. So, if she is mauve and he is sky blue, you will get all single dark factor offspring. If any come out sky blue, then you can rule out mauve. If any are grey-factored, you will know about that too.
April 6, 201114 yr He looks like a Golden face Sky Blue, to me. So, if she is mauve and he is sky blue, you will get all single dark factor offspring. If any come out sky blue, then you can rule out mauve. I think Whizzbang is GF cobalt so the outcome is not as for skyblue Edited April 6, 201114 yr by **KAZ**
April 6, 201114 yr Author Yes, I think Whizzbang is a GF Cobalt. He is much darker in real life, the flash has brightened his colours a lot. His chest is deep Olive Green, and it merges to quite a deep blue down his tummy and rump.
April 6, 201114 yr Oh, then it won't be conclusive. Unless you still get a sky blue baby, then you will know that both parents only have one dark factor.
