Short Legged Opaline Pied.

Featured Replies

Hello everybody! I haven't been here in ages!

Lorenza on my forum has had dominant pied opaline budgies which were born with legs that were too short. Their legs and feet are so small that they don't fit on regular perches.

Could this be related to the opaline mutation?

All the rest of the babies that are not opaline are quite fine.

None of the babies which are not opaline show any problem so there is no point in showin them.

Any ideas? Thank you, Martin

I would say its a result of inbreeding.

Nothing to do with opaline but maybe a doubling up of inherent faults by wrong selection of parents.

Budgie is also long flighted. Another fault.

Thanks, as far as inbreeding is concern, it's a no go. Lorenza would not have done that.

I didnt mean inbreeding. Just possible poor selection of parents with a similar fault.....it could have been a hidden fault and therefore the breeder would not have known when he paired them up.

I think their talking about my comment....

All show breeders inbreed to a safe level then we introduce outcrosses to these lines.

AAh true :D But most show breeders I know have a greater knowledge of the parentage of their birds...going back a few generations and a fuller knowledge of the possible faults. They will not breed with birds showing faults.

a lot do why theirs so many wasted birds with long flights kaz

cause even bird with normal flights from a family of birds with percentage of long flighted birds can carry the long flight genetic

so it can turn up if you dont know your supply's/breeders habits with their decisions on breeding birds with faults to birds with out same fault to right it

this happens a lot and the result is birds could look good and breed **** flighted chicks :{

I agree it has nothing to do with Opaline's I've had many many Opaline and they've never been born with short legs

it's most likely more of a bone and or calcium problem If the babies don't get the proper nutrients and calcium when they are being produced and growing up then they can't grow properly and their bones won't grow properly

I've had 1 pair have 5 babies and 2 of those had extremely Short flight feathers they actually looked like they'd had their wings clipped But they Never did they were born that way.
