Heya..... One of my cock birds had swollen leg.....due to mites....read through site and I cut it off with no extra damage, but since I cut it an hour or so ago...he is biting the leg due to irratation I think and is now drawing blood all over his leg.....What can I do here but a bangage on????? or leave it!!!!!

Hi Nowbudgie, I'm no expert, but I think if you have no antiseptic cream for birds, Savlon can be used. (one of the british breeders recommends using it for soothing small abrasions etc). It's something most of us have.

 

I'd give the leg a good wash off and then try the cream. Have you treated him for mites? Nothing is really going to help of course until the mites problem is treated.

 

No one else is on so I'm trying my best to give you some help, but certainly no expert in budgie wounds:unsure: And you aren't going to find yourself a vet of any sort on a Sunday around St George.

 

Someone else will be on later in the day with a bit more knowledge than me. Just found another post with the same problem - suggestion was betadine watered down (with boiled water) and try to soak the leg with it.

Thanks Hezz, I cleaned it with dettol....I will put betadine later if safe or savlon...... He just seems to make it worse by beaking at it it seems......

If he is annoying the wound, the savlon could help soothe the irritation. I haven't used it myself but a lot of sites give it a a heal-all for minor abrasions on birds, especially using it as a spray. I don't see how the cream could be toxic to them if the spray isn't. If you can, you could also try an Elizabethian collar on the poor thing - I can't imagine a budgie taking kindly to it, but if it's that or the leg....

Stopping the bleeding is the big thing. If he is biting it, you might need to bandage it up to protect it.

 

How is he now? I have only just read this, sorry I was not on earlier, or even yesterday.

Hi.... I didn't bandage it, was going to but he has stopped biting it and seems to be recovering slow.....been putting savlon on it.....seemed to stop irratation from when I first cleaned with dettol. Funny how serious things seem to happen to my best stock go figure!!! Thanks again for the help!!!!!
