Posted February 24, 201114 yr It's awfull, Greg and I were sitting out on the back veranda this arvo about 4 o'clock and he was looking down back towards the pigeon loft and Greg says snake and crikey there was a I think brown snake about 3 ft long maybe bigger sun baking on the white sand in the middle of the yard, when Greg said it the rotten thing stated moving, Greg rushed inside to get his boots on and I stayed watched, Jake was tied up next to us luckily BUT by the time Greg came back the snake had slivered over to the other side of the yard UNDER THE HUGE WOOD HEAP. Greg looked but couldn't find it. So now I am so scared and horrified it will get into my birds. In my bird room their are lots of hidy places for snakes too. I wanted to put snake net around the wood heap but that would be useless because Jake will only tear it up. So I put snake net around the bird room doors and any place I thought they could get in. Greg put some along the garden heading to my bird room area, the problem is we are having problems with mice at the moment, heaps of them, never seen so bad. The aviaries are free range for the snake, not much I can do about it, just praying it was just passing through but my gut tells me different and I know they search for food at night and early hours of morning. SO I AM REALLY SCARED. Brown snakes are deadly, remember the tiger snake last year that killed buffy and to think Greg said we will probably not see another one for ten years, YEAH SURE. It wasn't very thick so that's why we are thinking brown and it looked brown from the veranda . I am extra worried because Of the width of it I think it could squeeze into the aviary wire. Tomorrow I am buying some mouse proof wire to go over the wire that already is there.
February 24, 201114 yr Author I really don't think Greg would allow that, it is our winter warmth for the next 2 or 3 years, I think you can't cut any more wood from the bush now. Josh my son said to spray petrol over the wood heap and it will burn them a bit and they will come out angry so he said make sure you get Greg to do it and you stay on the veranda safe LOL. Anyway I mentioned to Greg and he said NO. I hate snakes at time like this I wished I live in New Zealand or England where they do not have snakes. That's what I have been told anyway. New Zealand doesn't have spiders or flies either, If i am wrong I am sorry but as I said that's what I have been told. to tell you the truth I am a bit scared to go out to the birdroom in the morning. POOR birds, I hope they stay safe.
February 24, 201114 yr Lets hope the snake takes care of your mice problem instead of the birds... Have you seen those things you stick in the ground that are meant to scare off snakes? Dunno if they work but got a brochure in the billbox the other day advertising them.
February 24, 201114 yr By the time you read this, you will probaly have done your morning check. I hope it all went well. I hate snakes, too. I feel very bad for you. Good luck. (Insert hug emoticon here- wish it was working!)
February 24, 201114 yr Author Thanks all, went out and checked this morning watching where I was stepping Urgghhh, Anyway the snake net around the bird room wasn't moving so that's good sign, I went inside but was really scared but all looked good. Aviaries all good too. Greg used the torch this morning to get to the garage and his car just to be safe. He leaves to go to work at 5.15am very dark. Jimmy are they those snake sonar things because my son Matthew was given 2 by his partners father because he lives in the sticks on the out skirts of Bendigo, Snakes galore. BUT he said they were around about $400. each. Keeping a watchful eye still.
February 25, 201114 yr He's prob gone from the wood heap... but can you flood him out??? Hose etc...?
February 25, 201114 yr Author To scared to on my own, I think I would have a heart attack if it came any where near me. The wood heap is about 15 all the way around and about 5 feet high, perfect place to live for a while, while it feeds on the mice or my birds, BUT so far so good. Greg said it might be just passing through, God I hope so.
February 25, 201114 yr I hate snakes last year i was hanging up washing for mum out the back when i finished i went inside then i looked out the back and there was a brown snake it eventually went under the fence and left. Â I hope it eats all you rats and not your birds
February 25, 201114 yr Sorry to hear Splat, Good thing you havent lost any birds though  I remember reading somewhere about a snake trap made out of a milo tin, and a large egg, I think it was a duck egg. You would drill a hole big enough for the snake to get its head in the hole - into the tin, and there would be an egg which is bigger than the hole in the milo tin. The snake would eat the egg and not be able to get back out for a while. You could try searching around on the internet, maybe you will have more luck than me.  Anyway good luck with getting rid of this snake. Harry
February 25, 201114 yr We have brown snakes, my brother and I found two babies. Don't kill it, it's illegal. You could relocate it or get a snake man to pick it up for you ( if you even have one in your town ).
February 25, 201114 yr Author Had a look at the traps Harry but sounds a bit dangerous. Ratzy won't be killing anything unless we are at risk. I know it is illegal but if it comes our life and dog and birds OR the snakes I know the snake will be the one. WE do not have a snake catcher here in our town that I know of. Any way you can judge me if you like but my view is a good snake is a dead snake in my backyard. I am terrified of them , have been having nightmares over this one. What about last year that rotten tiger snake killed our beloved Buffy anyway if it hadn't got Buffy it would of got Greg It was aggressive. I think it is gone but the strange thing is that I went out just before checking to see if it got caught in the snake netting and I noticed that Jake had been in the wood heap and has pulled a couple of pieces of wood out and they are big pieces, he pulled them out into the middle of the yard. i think that is strange as he has never done that before, so I am guessing he has smelled the snake an has tried to get to it. SO I guess it is still there hiding. Birds are all good. Edited February 25, 201114 yr by splat
February 26, 201114 yr The company that sent me a brochure has a website, www.derwenttraders.com.au Like I said, I haven't used them but I'm pretty sure they were cheaper then $300...
February 26, 201114 yr Author Sorry Jimmy NOT spending one penny on a snake. That rotten tiger snake costs us nearly $700.00 Feb last year on vet bills and we still ended up with a dead dog. Â I was worried about Jake too, because he was pulling the wood out of the wood heap, I thought he must of got the snake scent. I think it has gone, touch wood. God I hope it has. There is a friend around the corner that use to be a snake catcher but he is in his sixties now and he would probably be to slow, But the problem is the wood heap is enormous, just got to hope it has gone. Keeping our eyes open and watching where we walk and every time Jake goes crazy we rush out and have a look. BUT I am sure he barks at the thin air sometimes.lol
March 1, 201114 yr How about leaving the snakes alone. Then they generally leave us alone too - unless they think that they have to fight for their lives - which, sadly is often the case around us humans.
March 1, 201114 yr Author Don't have to worry Nubbly, I am NOT going any where near it if I see it. BUT it looks like it has traveled on, well I hope so anyway. Greg is still using the torch in the mornings to get to his car and I am watching where I am walking. We still have snake net up just to stop it from getting into the birdroom and that's protecting the birds. BUT I still don't like them, really afraid of them actually. Spiders come in second. The night the tiger snake killed Buffy, I was no help, I was standing on top of the kitchen table. a real sook. but a safe one at that.
March 1, 201114 yr Rats and mice breed in woodpiles......the snake will be there after them. Its when he runs out of food you have to get worried. BUT since you have a dog and since you lost the dog before to snakebite, you have every reason to be concerned.
March 1, 201114 yr Author Thanks Kaz, I am catching 3 mice a day, I think I have caught over 30 in the last 2 or 3 weeks, also got one in The pantry in the house, kept Greg and I awake all chewing, so the next day in went the mouse traps and talon and we got one I had to go and buy heaps of containers to put our food in last week because I had to through a heap away that they got into. I am so sick of all these mice, it has put me off putting the birds down, the more seed in the breeding cages and on the floor more mice I think. That's why I was dieing to get my new room finished because it will be more mouse proof than my old one. My old one is mouse proof as I can get it but they still get in. BUT I have never had a mouse problem until now, Greg said they will go away soon, that everyone has the same problem at the moment but I don't know whether to believe him or not. The problem with the snake is that if Jake sees it I really think he would try and play with it because really he is that silly. Still a big puppy, he would pounce on it and bang dead dog. If he sees frogs and lizards he goes after them and chucks them around and plays, so I think he would do the same for a snake and wouldn't see the danger. Â A worry.
March 1, 201114 yr I was at our avian vets one day when a man raced in with his dog in his arms. Snakebite. The worst part of this was he had brought his other dog in just an hour earlier from snakebite. He went home to find the second dog had been bitten as well. When we had the dugite in our yard the dogs went for it and it was their unusual barking sound they made that alerted me to the fact they werent after a mouse this time. Lucky for us the dogs werent bitten. Snakebusters came out and removed the snake after I made a phonecall. Â The thing with our aviaries is...............too many aviary owners dont think of the mesh going to the ground and the mesh is usually widthwise across 25mm wide by 12 mm deep gaps in the mesh. Mice get through this and so can snakes. I always now make sure there is metal from 2-3 ft high all around the mesh aviaries by adding it and screwing it or pop rivetting it on. I have the metal to do the new aviaries and will acchieve it really soon. Mice running through aviaries is stress and disease causing as some of us know. Not everyone thinks about modifying their aviaries to stop it being mesh all the way down to the ground. With my flights and aviaries back in the house we are selling NO MICE got in once it was done. So cool
March 1, 201114 yr Author Kaz I have steel around my aviary have seen a mouse in there, wire is small. It's the old bird room where I am catching the little beggers and in The garage. They seem to be able to squeeze through the smallest spaces. driving me nuts. Jake has a really deep scary bark when someone comes but he also gets carried away with the same bark over nothing, the hair on his back stands up he looks very scary. Anyway I am buying some more of that mouse proof wire and see if I can do some more mouse proofing.
March 1, 201114 yr my flights double wired and i have mesh of 33 mil stain steel pop riveted to bottom of shed all way around nothings getting in all cavertys were filled and no hole /gap left un filled ive not had mice issues in aviary since i had to block above and under door also  i vac daily as well and have never seen mouse poo again or smelt them the birds also as kaz said don't get fright at night anymore due to mice activity at night
March 2, 201114 yr Mix up some bleach with water and spray it in and around the woodpile for a couple of days, they can't stand the smell and will move on.
March 2, 201114 yr Author What for the snake or the mice Taboo. I was at friends place today and he has the same problem. Mice I mean
