Breeding Numbers?

Featured Replies

After breeding show type birds for the past 12 months I can see how fast your stud can go from 20 birds to 50 and so on.

Now this worries me because of the room I have and then trying to get rid of excess stock which is not always easy.

So I need to breed smart which will involve only breeding twice a year and only putting 4 pairs down at a time.

Maybe only letting the hen do 1 round if she has more then 5 chicks, as some of my hens can have 6 and some only 1 or 2.

Do you think this can work, because really I don't want a 100 birds plus to look after as I have a life out side of birds.

I would like to show my birds over the next few years, but will quality over quantity work?

It does seem that you need to breed big numbers to maybe get a few good birds.

oops this topic should have been put under breeding show budgies.

When I was having to stop budgies breeding due to moving and went down to just a small handful of pairs that were still breeding, thats when all the trouble started. Thats when things went wrong with eggs and chicks and I had no backups to foster anything to. Valuable eggs from excellent birds had to be thrown away and chicks had to be euthenased as there was nowhere else they could go when any trouble arose. I will never let it get to just a handful again. You need more than four pairs breeding I think to backup what can go wrong and to have your fosters.

Theres always the forum to offer your culls to.

What's the minim amount of pairs you should have down at one time?

I would go with eight but everyone has differing ideas. Its was just so heartbreaking for me to only having a small handful of pairs and nowhere to save chicks or eggs.

i breed 6 pairs with two fosters at least so eight all up is lest you can do got top go ill finish what i was saying ron ... sozzz
