Help With Sexing Please

Hi everyone.

Jess's budgies are all thriving.

We have had 2 new additions to the flock. A relative gave us 2 budgies, Jaws & Saphire.

Jaws is from an old aviary and is a small budgie of unknown age.

Saphire was just purchased from a shop 2 weeks ago. Saphire appears to be young and hand raised. So we decided to keep Saphire in a cage to be a hand raised budgie for Jess.

Jaws is called Jaws because of his/her bite :o

We would like some input into the birds sexes please. We had some great, informative feedback from the last pics and was asked to post some more when they were a bit older.

So here they are.....

Hi Robbo,

Lovely birds.

Basil and Saphire are both males and the rest are all hens.

Cheers Jenny

PS Saphire looks like a young adult cock, he also may need treatment for scaley face but might need a better photo of his beak.

Thanks.

I had a close look at Saphire with a magnifing glass. Couldn't see any holes in the cere, or evidence of mites. Looks a tad dry at the base of the ceree where it meets the beak.

Also had a close look at all the others too. We sure got a workout whilst I was trying to catch them all one at a time. I am talking about me as well:wacko:

Jaws seems to have a very dry cere. Appears to be flaky. But again no holes or evidence of mites. I will take them to the vet just in case.

Cheers

BJ

It is normal for a hen to get a flaky cere - it usually means she is at the end of breeding condition - you should start seeing blueish white underneath. She doesn't look to have scaley mite on your photo.

If you do take them to a vet, make sure you get an avian vet if you have one available.

The dryness at the base of Saphires cere does appear to be beginnings of scalyface to me too. Saphire is a cock so advice about a hens cere does not apply in this case.

Sorry I was mentioning the dryness for a hen's cere because Robbo mentioned that Jaws has a very dry cere. I should have stated that, sorry if I confused everyone.

Thanks.

No confusion at all.

We have a very good bird vet near us at West Wallsend.

I will get a better picture of Saphires face for a better appraisal.

I will start treatment for scapy face now.

I am amazed that you can tell from this picture that he has it.

Thanks for all your help.
