It Is With A Sad Heart

That I have to acknowledge the passing of my beloved Santa :( I found him on the floor of the aviary today, a sad little bundle of green and yellow - perfectly fine and healthy last night. Seems his neck was broken so I can only assume he had night fright and flew into the aviary mesh, or crash landed as he wasn't a super hot flyer. All I know is he was happy and healthy - in his prime with the ladies (and gents) of the aviary like a pig in mud.

He was a happy healthy budgie who first took my eye in a thread posted on here from someone named KAZ who was selling exhibition budgies. I had never owned an exhibition budgie so this was a great thrill to be able to purchase my very own brand new "boofhead" budgie. I went to pick up my gorgeous boy and got the grand tour of this lovely breeder's birdroom and aviary. I was also gifted a hen, - my rather plump Mrs Claws, whom my Santa found great delight in chatting up the whole way home.

And so my love for the hobby began. These two budgies, and Kaz were what started me off in my almost obsessive passion for the Exhibition Budgerigar. Since then, Karen (Kaz) gifted me more of her lovely birds to help me on my way to becoming a champion breeder (HAHANO not really - that is much MUCH more into the future ;)) After quarantining these other budgies, Santa thought it was his sole purpose in the aviary to check them all out, make sure they were up to his standards. Obviously they were because he immediately started chatting them up and doing his humpy thing with them (most were cocks but that didn't seem to be an issue for him :) )

His favorite was a little hen - a light green normal who seemed to match him with his humping eagerness, which for him was lucky as some of the other hens were taking a slight dislike to constantly being chatted up and mounted - was was also getting a few disapproving looks from the cocks who had taken a fancy to the hens and pairing up with them.

Santa has always been my favorite - my seeking him out every morning and evening to give him little pep talks about how to treat the ladies, receiving his input and nibbles and giving him the odd cheek rub when and if he allowed it. I'm kicking myself that I didn't breed him and have some offspring of his to cherish.

It is a sad day in the aviary - it's been very quiet.

RIP my gorgeous boy, I will miss seeking you out for our daily chats, and your gentle nibbles.

I'm so sorry to hear this Amy, it is hard to lose any bird so suddenly but I know the special ones are extra hard.

Fly free Santa.
