Females Cere Never Changes- But She Goes Through All The Motions..

I have an English Budgie female I've had her since 2008 I got her in a group totaling 6 including her, I don't know her age Only 1 was banded and he was 5 when I got them.

Her cere has Never changed to breeding mode Ever She's never laid an egg (well at least for the 3 years I've owned her) I still have 4 of the 6 I originally started with 1 Male and 4 females(including the one I'm talking about) the male produces babies left and right, the 1 female has Given me 1 baby and she's on 4 eggs now (she's had other eggs but the I put with her was to busy mating the cage bars LOL) the other Female When she stops hanging from the cage top has given me 3 babies But I think she has to have just the right male and unfortunately the only one she bred with died several months ago from a stroke :(

but back to my Question

she goes through the motions - she'll sit in the nest box For days on end, When I check to see if she has any eggs She does all the normal Mad budgie mom stuff - rocks back and forth, "yells" at me etc. But never eggs and The cere never goes brown its either chalky white, or chalky white with a tinge of blue

she Did have a huge lump on her lower stomach near her vent Last year Took her to the vet they drained that put her on Baytril for a week and she's been fine ever since They did not test what they drained so I don't know what the lump actually was - We don't have an Avian vet in town (we have a Avian vet that travels that holds clinics twice a year but He wasn't in town when she had her lump) So in Emergency situations I have to take my birds to the only Cat/Dog vet in town that sees birds and Well they're dumber than a box of rocks I should of known not to take her after a call made to them a year before but thats a different story entirely

I was wondering if any one has ever had a female Never go into breeding condition but go through the motions, Should I give her time and see if she produces or Call it quits for her and chalk it up to her being older than I think she is and either just keep her to let her live out her life here Or find her a pet only home

here's a couple pictures of her - she's not one to hold still - Her Name is Jade and this is basically what her cere has looked like since the day I got her 3 years ago

I've never experienced it myself, but having said that I can take a wild guess and say it is possible she has limited or perhaps missing ovaries or reproductive organs. Reason for suspecting this is related to the fact she has not appeared to go through the hormonal changes in cere, nor has she laid an egg. Only a guess :)

I doubt that she will ever breed and most breeders would not have given her so many chances to produce nothing. Not that im being critical, I would likely have done exactly as you have. Just saying I know breeders who will sell a hen at the first sign of trouble!

I bought a pair last August I think and I paid a fair bit for them and the hens cere has been almost blue until about 6 weeks ago when it went light brown but 2 weeks later going blue again and now light brown again. I am dieing to put her down

while her cere is the right colour and before it changes back. She was a year old in Jan.

Oh see that's where I'm different and maybe because Breeding for me is a Hobby and nothing more (I knew ahead of time I'd never make money at it and my records show that LOL) Plus i'm not one to give up quickly If I did then my Albino who hangs up side down practically 24/7 for the last 3 years would of been gone long ago But nope I kept trying and got 3 Babies from her kept 2 of them :D and she's on 7 eggs now (checked last night) So I'm hoping these ones are fertile If not then I know she only likes Grey Spangle males and I will have to hunt me down another one because the only other one is her son and that's not going to happen. :) but If she doesn't do anything this time around (I know all the males I've put her with are Good They've Created babies before and after they were with her I may just sell her to a pet only home. She's actually very nice and laid back - skittish but Doesn't really bite she nibbles She has never even taken to any male in the community cage (that is why I keep picking boys for her usually I let them pick their own mate unless I am trying for a certain mutation) She is always off by her self doing her own thing

her's never gets brown its never even had the smallest tinge of brown and I have put her with several males nest box and all She just goes through the motions

Hopefully yours Will go in to condition soon and stay there- maybe its because she's still young?

oh and if by chance the cause was that she has no reproductive organs or ovaries is it possible she was born that way?? When I bought them I bought them as a Package all from the same lady who colony/aviary bred them Some were the offspring of others But by the time my b/f got home with them He couldn't remember who was related to who - So i've just Made sure never to pair up any females with the Male I have left from them (the other male who was the only one who was banded died shortly after I got them at 5 yrs old So I never bred him) Wondering if maybe since she breeds in a colony/aviary Then maybe she had some Inbreeding going on and Jade was the out come of that and perhaps Thats why she doesn't lay eggs I know not all the issues with inbreeding can be seen visually

its just a thought and in 3 years you'd think I'd at least get an egg even if she didn't have a nest box I've gotten at least 1 egg laid in a cage or a food dish of my community cage with every female I have Even when I kept them separated and had all girls in one cage all boys in another I even have females that jump the gun when given a nest box and ignore the male and just go straight to the box and start laying

which that makes me even more confused about Jade there's even been times I've thought well maybe she's actually a He with a Internal issue causing the cere to look like a girls - but Since Jade doesn't buddy up to any other birds That isn't helping either plus I already know 2 girls can buddy up as can 2 boys I get that all the time But she doesn't even let another bird preen her she doesn't preen them nothing! I get more action from 2 boys or 2 girls Then she gives lol
