Posted March 7, 201114 yr Hmmm. My single male budgie, upon reaching the age of around 8 months, has suddenly decided he wants to mate with every inanimate object he comes into contact with. Everything, to his eyes, is a girl budgie. My question is: is this a 'stage'? Or will he keep it up forever?
March 7, 201114 yr He will do it while the mood takes him. How long for is anyones guess. Even female budgie hump objects ..... You will have to just ignore it
March 7, 201114 yr Author Righto. In the meantime, I'll just have to hide my mobile phone, my pens, the TV remote, the sugar bowl, my keys, sunglasses, all the cutlery, jewellery.... It's made all the worse as he's once of those talkers: "I love you. Who's a little cutie. You're gorgeous. My little baby. You're so naughty. Daddy's home. Yeah, baby..." Careful what you say to your bird. It may come back to haunt you in ways you never imagined.
March 8, 201114 yr omg that is so funny i dont think it was a good thing( as in i didn't mean to picture it) but the budgie and your spoon i just saw a quick glimpse in my mind him chatting the spoon up one leg on the handle one on the spoony bit kissing his reflection saying oh yeah baby ,your so naughty ,daddys home very very quiet funny made my day i needed a laugh thanks :} Edited March 8, 201114 yr by GenericBlue
March 8, 201114 yr Stace, if you remove everything from the poor lad just be aware of nails as in fingernails and toenails. My male Bluey, used to get talking to my big toenail and then humping my foot. And yes, he's a talker too. Hello, gorgeous, give us a kiss, cute little good boy, come on etc etc. It really was quite hilarious but felt it probably wasn't appropriate behaviour to have my budgie jacking off on my foot. He grew out of it (maybe felt it was only a one-way relationship :)) I think, but he has stopped. Good luck, he really wants a girlfriend you know. Hezz
March 8, 201114 yr Author My budgie is a hopeless romantic. Lucky I'm not too prudish, I guess! Poor little thing. It's sad really. He was a rescued baby, so I was never prepared for the whole budgie ownership thing. They're adorable things, birds, but a little strange. At least to a first-timer like me. I know he wants a girlfriend, but I just can't commit to another bird at the moment, especially when I wasn't planning on any at all. He likes to sit perched on my finger and pressed up really close under my nose. We call it his 'facetime'. This afternoon I sang him "Rockabye Birdie in the treetop". He sits there really still, pushing his beak into my top lip and goes off into a complete trance. My little weirdo.
March 8, 201114 yr I know he wants a girlfriend Budgie boys flirt with and chat up other budgies boys in the aviary, as well as girls. Dont talk yourself into all this stuff meaning her wants or needs a girlfriend. Its a social thing with budgies.........flirting and chatting up anything that either moves or doesnt move. If you have ever seen budgies bonking their drinker, sides of cage, perch .....anything at all really, you will soon find it females as well as males that masturbate against objects or bonk anything or flirt with anything. it isnt just a male thing about needing a girlfriend. You are denying him nothing
March 8, 201114 yr Oops, that came out all wrong, didn't it???? Good on you Stace for taking in a rescue... It seems that he is really tame and bonded well with you. Does he tuck his head in under your nose??? Blue does that too, and give a kiss sound. I certainly wasn't trying to push the point of getting him a companion. Everyone's circumstances are different and what one person would do is not necessary the right thing for the other person. He sounds a total charmer.. have you named him?? Love to see a photo.
March 8, 201114 yr My birds flirt all the time, I have cock birds and hens doing it to the perch and wire.
March 8, 201114 yr Author Thanks for the reality check, Kaz. For a moment there I'd nearly set him up with a new wife, kids and a mortgage! And yes, Hezz, he kisses everything. Big smacking kisses. I had no idea they'd mimic that as well. I've created a little kissing monster. A while back when he went through his first ever moult, I had a brief problem with him biting. I tried all the stuff everyone said to do, like ignoring him, putting him in his cage, blowing on him, saying NO. The only thing that stopped him was repetitive kisses on his beak. It seemed to throw him long enough to make him forget he was in a bitey mood. As for his name, it started off as Nelson. That's his "official' name. It's the name of my hometown, as well as the famous English Admiral. But he gets called Toots, Little Toot, or Boo Boo. I just uploaded a photo of him in to my profile. It's from about a month after I found him. Or he found me, really. One day he just flew in through my open balcony and started dancing on my head while I was on the phone. He loves my husband. I'm still wondering if it's because he grew a moustache for Movember and hasn't shaved it off yet - and it's a lot like a birdie snuggle. I work from home a lot, so Toots gets to fly free for much of the day. When His Majesty arrives home from work, and I say "Daddy's home!" he gets so excited, flying up and down the house from one end to the other squawking like a mad thing. We've got a really long skinny terrace house so he gets around 20 metres of flying space. He can't really get some speed up. There you go. Just put his photo as my avatar.
March 11, 201114 yr Oh he is such a cutie!! Reading this has reminded me of the 'joy' of keeping a budgie. LOL Um... Just a question, when Dalek starts flirting with everything (Hope to gosh he doesn't do it soon! xD), if he does anything with anything in his cage, how do i clean it? Do I just need to wipe it away or clean the whole thing with warm water?
