A member of my club was culling birds, so I picked some up. They were a very reasonable price at $10 each and I got a total of 8.

 

Here they are

 

On the top perch (from left to right) there is a Grey normal hen, Violet Spangle cock, Grey cinnamon hen (which I believe is the grey normal hen's mother),

Blue opaline normal hen, Blue opaline normal cock (i think those two are siblings)

 

On the bottom there is another Blue opaline normal hen, Sky blue recessive pied cock and lastly a Green opaline normal cock.

 

I don't have the specifics on the birds yet, I will be getting them at my nest meeting so that the member i bought them off has time to find their records.

The only one i know of is the green cock whose father is a Grey clearbody and his mother is a Opaline grey green. So his offspring should be quite interesting

These were the only ones sitting still to give me clear photos (well, as clear as you can get through bars)

 

Before anyone says it, i know the rule of cage setup is that you should have the perches going front to back. But i measured it, and the space between these

perches is the same between those in my breeding cabinets. It just looks smaller because of the angle of the photo, but there is a decent amount of space between them.

Also, with front to back perches, it makes accessing the water dish doors in the front very difficult.

 

Besides, this is only until quarantine is over.

 

This is the quarantine setup i got going.

 

 

Just a cage stand with a tarp around it. There is planks of wood on the top to extend the tarp to make an awning.

Its far enough away but close enough so they are not completely cut off.

They are all lovely!

 

And what a bargain at $10 each! You are very lucky.

 

Love the set up you've got going, if Dad decides to buy more I've got to get one set up soon. LOL But hopefully he'll stop buying for a while and just enjoy the ones we have. xD

It was quite hot. I think the member i got them off read his thermometer at 35˚c

 

Unfortunately it was also very windy, and the tarp was acting like a sail, so I moved them temporarily inside the shed, just inside the door.

Its so exciting. I've already got a rough idea who I'm pairing them to. The cinnamon grey hen is going to go with my grey normal cock Gandalf (in my sig),

only because she is an experienced mother and he is a newbie.

The blue spangle cock is going with my grey spangle hen, so I should get some lovely white DF spangles. So far thats all i got, until i get the information on their bloodlines

so i don't accidentally in-breed

Pegs are to stop escapes. Predators will get at those birds as the front of the cages are not protected.

You did well at $10 each.

I would move them inside as a rat will easily get in that cage and kill

your birds, and I should know because it happened to me with a similar

cage on my verandah. And watch out for snakes and butcher birds as well.

I am in agreement with others, I think you need to move the birds. Not a very secure place to have them. Do you have a verandah at least to put them under? What abotu some bird netting 1 metre off the front of hte cage to sto wild birds getting too close?

 

Your new birds are lovely, they come at a great price, and you obviously care about them a lot, so remember that all our suggestions are not about creating more work or being negative, we would just hate to see anything bad happen.

At the moment they are still in the door of the shed, so I think i might just leave them there.

They will get some sunshine in the afternoon and they still get fresh air.

And its undercover to allow for terrible weather.

 

It just might be a bit of an inconvenience if I want to get something out of there....but at least i know the birds will be safe.

but have you covered the front of the cages ?? or are they behind a proper door ?

 

As we so often advise no birds outside without supervision........this is no different ..........birds in cages in the yard are at risk of a cats paw reaching through, rat attack, and butcher birds and the like. At least in an aviary they can get away from the front of the aviary in most cases but in a cage like that they are within reach of predators.

Well to be super sure that they aren't getting attacked, i could put the cage in the aviary. But that defeats the purpose of quarantine a bit.

 

They are just inside the door of the shed, and it can be closed. My cats and dog have all seen the birds, but are totally uninterested as they can't reach them.

I will most likely get some of the shade cloth I used before i got the divider in my aviary and cover them, so I'm super sure.

Good price to get them at $10 is cheap not like them pet stores that have them selling for $20

Plus I got them from a breeder, so they are better quality than pet shops too

I'd give just about anything to have a gray like the ones you have, but I can't find one in any pet shop and all the avian breeders around here don't bother with budgies because they're not the big money-makers.

Yep, once they are out of quarantine I will be pairing some of them up (if their condition allows it).

Yeah breeders birds are a lot better although they have really nice ones at the pet shops breeders birds are cheaper

Yet again, I acquired 8 new budgies.

I was a steward at the Central Coast annual show yesterday.

At the end of the day, I found myself taking home budgies that didn't get sold (and were obviously not wanted)

I'm well taken care of in my club and I love it.

 

I got 5 babies (2011 rung) and 3 older birds.

There is 4 girls and 4 boys.

I'm not sure of this one's variety.

Her wing markings look faded, but they don't look brown. So help with her would be appreciated.

 

So I'm quite happy with what I got.

I kind of said to myself when I started that I would stay away from greens.

I have nothing against them, in fact I think some of these birds are beautiful.

Its just that green birds are harder to get rid of, and as I'm still starting out, my birds aren't of show quality yet.

But, I'm not going to turn down free birds

Sad news.

 

The youngest one, who I had named Dizzy and had gotten very fond of, passed on this morning.

 

It came as a bit of a surprise because he was a picture of health.

 

But I just keep thinking to myself, 'What if he had gotten sold? What if some little girl somewhere had just lost her friend?'

So I will let the breeder I got him off know at the next meeting, but I doubt he or anybody would of been able to predict this.

Thats not good news, was he able to crack seed? maybe he was to young to be for sale.
