Hi from Broken Hill…..I have been viewing the threads on the forum for a few weeks, so thought I had better do the right thing and join. At the moment I don't have any budgies as I still have to complete building my aviary (link below) but will be looking for a few pairs of recessive pieds as soon as the aviary is completed. I need some advice in regards to roofing the flight, is it best to fully roof or can I sheet 75% and just wire the remaining 25%. also what is the size dowel and spacing used for perches.

Cheers,

Milton.

Hi Milton, can't help you with your questions, but welcome anyway!

Hezz

Your aviary is looking pretty good so far :) The birds need natural sunlight so its up to you as far as coverage of the aviaries goes. Some people get worried about disease from wild bird droppings. You have to weigh up the risks in relation to sunlight which the birds need for vitamin D3 and it helping with absorption of calcium.

Can you roof the whole thing but put in sky lights so they get sunshine in some areas without the wild birds being able to drop their bombs right down into the flight?

Looks impressive if you ask me.

Welcome!

looks great

if was me i would cover whole flight but id put a sliding part on just the end only about a meter so on really nice days you can go pull back the pannal and wallah sun light to sit in

or if you want misty rain on a nice summer/autumn day :)

if you were worryed about bird droppings into flight i use a match stick blind over my pop out sun still filters through heaps and they dont get pooed on i can also take it off to clean or if needed replace

Unfortunately, it's been learned that windows block out the UV rays that the birds need to get from the sun in order to produce the vitamin D they need, so skylights would defeat the purpose.

Skylights do brighten up the interior, though, so it is an option. But other members on here have found that they then need to have some sort of cover to put over the skylights, in order to minimize the heat during the summer.

Thanks to all who replied…..I will sheet the flight except for 1200mm, this will be wire covered with 50% white shade cloth…..thanks again for your input and welcome.

Would still like to know the size dowel and spacing used for perches,
