Posted February 23, 201114 yr Hey everybody. The pics are pretty big and I'm too excited to find out their colors right now to want to fool with resizing them so I'll post links. I hope that's okay, and I'll be resizing from now on when I need to post them in here. First up is Lily. At first glance he appears to be solid white but on closer inspection you can see a shadow of sky blue infused lightly through his rump feathers. I was told this means he is either recessive pied or double factor spangle, and I'm going to just have to wait and see if he develops iris rings or not to know for sure. I'm assuming he really is a he. Lily Lily's rump, haha Next up we have Echo. I'm guessing Echo is a boy, and a single factor violet opaline. I can't tell if that's on sky blue or cobalt. Echo Echo Then comes Atlas. My guess is male, yellow face type 2 greywing. Atlas On The Left Atlas And then there's Toothless. I'm guessing male, yellow face type 1 sky blue dominant pied. What you're not seeing in Toothless's pictures is that his wing and tail feathers are very pale yellow, and the feathers on his rump are an incredibly vibrant turquoise. Toothless On The Right Toothless On The Right Again Now the Girls. First up is Abra. I'm guessing she is a classic green. Abra And then there's Nyxie, whom I'm thinking might be a sky blue opaline clearwing. But she also has an interesting infusion of turquoise through all of her feathers. Nyxie Well anyway, I can't wait to see what you all have to say about their colors. Hopefully I'm not too far off base. I've been reading about their color genetics for almost 2 weeks now and it's still confusing. How long will it take me to learn this? Also I was wondering if there are any comprehensive budgie color and mutation genetics books that also help figure out which matings are likely to get which colors? Thanks!
February 23, 201114 yr okay my go is... White DF Spangle (yes a he). Opaline cobalt or Opaline Sky violet. Boy YF2 Skyblue greywing. Boy YF1 Skyblue Dom Pied. Boy Opaline Light Green. Girl Skyblue Opaline Greywing (possibly spangle too). Girl
February 23, 201114 yr Author Woohoo I got a couple of them right on my own! What would you need to see/know about Echo to figure out if he's cobalt or sky violet? There is purple around his neck and up between the black bars on the back of his head.
February 23, 201114 yr Woohoo I got a couple of them right on my own! What would you need to see/know about Echo to figure out if he's cobalt or sky violet? There is purple around his neck and up between the black bars on the back of his head. Pretty hard to tell particularly from pictures. Many blues and cobalts have a violet suffusion around the neck and rump without actually being violets. In the flesh they are easier to tell - cobalts blue is often patchy on the chest whereas violet skys are a more even colour on the chest. If you knew he parentage we could make a better guess or if you know some of his breeding results (if he has any). Otherwise it's possible he's either.
February 23, 201114 yr Next up we have Echo. I'm guessing Echo is a boy, and a single factor violet opaline. I can't tell if that's on sky blue or cobalt. Echo Echo I wouldnt be too quick to say Echo is a boy as many a female starts out with whiteblue ceres and Echo has white on the cere too. Better cere photos needed and no flash on camera please Here's mine female female and female see what I mean ? and echo is sky violet as already suggested by Nubbly Edited February 23, 201114 yr by **KAZ**
February 23, 201114 yr I'm not sure with some of the"boys" either. How old is Lily, Echo and Atlas?? To me they all look like young hens. Toothless has the bright pink cere of a young male.
February 23, 201114 yr Author Echo, Toothless, Lily, and Atlas are all under 4 months. I know Echo, Atlas and Toothless are because they still have bars all the way down to their ceres. I'm guessing Lily is the same because I got him in the same time range and all the other budgies there were that young. I know nothing of their parentage as these are all pet shop birds. I'll work on getting some better pictures of their ceres today. I'll have to move the cage so when I take the picture the light is to my back. Really though, they're all bluer and more purple when I look at them and I get frustrated at how light they appear on camera. Be back this afternoon with hopefully better pics.
February 23, 201114 yr Author Better pics set right into the message so you don't have to click any links, up in the "what sex is my budgie" forum.
