Is she gonna lay?

Hi all,

Been a while since my last post on this forum but I always like to check back and see the latest pics etc. Nice to see the new chicks coming along.

I let Pogi out of his cage every day but Ganda doesnt ever seem to come out. Just the other day Jessa insisted Ganda came out for a fly so we persisted and eventually managed to entice her out.

She cannot fly too well because shes a fat bird. We are working on getting this down now by insisting she comes out every day for at least a few hours.

Anyway back on topic when Ganda was out the other night sitting on the floor, Pogi suddenly jumped up on her back and started swinging his hips :)

Jessa and I were in hysterics. He seemed to keep looking back at us to say "Hey, look at me!" but Ganda was squarking in the most unusual way I have ever heard. Now they seem to be doing this every day when they are both out of the cage, but never when they are inside.

I have also noticed that Ganda's cere is now becoming very chocolate like and so I've increased greens and added vitamins to their water.

There is a nesting box on the side of their cage, which has been there for months. She always goes inside during the day (in and out and in and out) but never during the evening.

Does this mean that perhaps one day she will go in and not come out? Is she getting ready to lay some eggs? What should we do? (Laughing out loud) Im excited but don't really know what to do from here.

Any advice welcome!!!

Thanks,

Chris

Hi Chris

It does seem like they want to breed. How old are your birds more so your hen?

Just be careful that she is not to over weight if she does have eggs and babies she may sit heavy and hurt the bubs if any.

When they are mateing are they on a perch? If not it will be very hard for the eggs to be fertile.

good luck and keep us posted.

It sounds like Pogi is trying to get Ganda into breeding condition, but if she if fussing at him she is not quite ready yet. :) Normally the hen won't make a sound and will lay very still for him with her head thrown back, but the cock will be making little clucking and warbling noises the whole time. An increase in fresh veggies is a good idea, as they will crave them once she lays eggs. If you don't have one already, add a cuttlebone. Once they decide to mate, it probably will occur on the perch, and probably in the morning before you wake up. :D If you cover the cage at night you may not see them actually mate. Ganda may not stay in the box until she lays an egg or two.

If she is really a bit overweight, I would try to discourage mating until she loses a few grams. Keep us posted!
