Handling A New Baby Budgie

Featured Replies

Hi. I recently got a new baby budgie. He is about 15 weeks old now and I have had him for almost 3 weeks. I want to be able to play with me and be out of his cage a bit. How much should I be taking him out now and holding him? He usually makes an awful screeching noise when I pick him up, but as soon as I stop touching him he stops. He seems happy to sit on me, or wander around on the floor, just as long as he isn't being touched. Mum says that because he is still a baby I shouldn't take him out of his cage so much, that he needs time to get used to me and he needs more rest than an older budgie. Is she right? Thank you.

Budgies are birds they are not cats or dogs so they particuarlly do not like to be held there is always an expection. I wouldn't hold your bird I would spend time bonding with your bird by letting him do the things he likes like coming out with you while you are on the computer and exploring your desk, sitting on your shoulder and preening your hair, talking to him when he is in and out of his cage.

There is a great FAQ article called Taming My Budgie you may want to check out and read over :). Sound like you have a sweetie of a bird.

Elly gives the best taming advice....I would listen to her. :)
