Hello, my family and I have an aviery with budgies in it, two of our budgies decided to pair up and breed. We have only just taken two of the chicks out of the nest and put them in to a nursery cage last night.

 

They are not drinking water and it is a really hot day. Do you have any tips on how to get the budgies to drink water? At the moment the only way I am getting it done is by putting droplets of water on my finger and letting them bite it off me, but i'm scared that is going to teach them to bite me, and I really don't want that. :/

Budgies get moisture from their food. Believe it or not they can go a week or more without water as long as they have seed. If your budgie babies are eating seed they are fine. They may even be drinking water when you arent looking and you certainly wont see the water level drop dramatically. they must always have water accessible though.

Make sure you didnt remove them too soon from their parents and be very sure they are eating.

Our babies were eating but we decided to put them back in to the flight aviary, we were worried that they weren't really ready. And when we did put them back in, they flew straight out of the nesting box and their dad took over and fed them. So we are letting him look after them for now.

 

Do you have any tips for us so we know when they are ready to come in to a nursery cage, or are we able to keep them in the flight aviary?

are you wanting to tame them as pets or keep them as part of the flock? if the later they can stay out there if they are moving around with ease and are not getting attacked by anyone.

I would love to tame them, but if it is better for them to be left in the flock, then I might leave them in there.
