Hi everyone

I've just become interested in budgies because my neice has an aviary and it looked like a lot of fun. My aviary has very quickly grown to 14 birds and my daughter has one bird in her bedroom cage. Two of the birds in the aviary used to be in my daughter's room and one of those (called Bruce because we knew so little about budgies back then) has just today laid her first egg. Unfortunately it was broken - I don't know why. I'll be interested to see if another egg appears tomorow or the next day after reading about this on this forum.

We have a variety of colours and spangle, clearwing, greywing etc. It's all very confusing but we're enjoying learning all about it.

Watching the aviary is like Days of Our Lives.

Have a good weekend everyone.

Jennifer.

welcome to the site, sounds like a great flock of birds there.

Could you tell us a bit of the set up you have for breeding to judge more on this broken egg. E.g are you colony breeding or selective breeding? If colony breeding where are the boxes placed and how many?

Colony breeding will account for broken eggs, and fights and smashed eggs, nestbox raids and killed or maimed chicks.

If you truly want to experience the joy of successfully breeding budgies try one pair at a time in a breeding cage with their nestbox. Never have any budgies under the age of 12 months in an aviary where nestboxes are.
