Posted May 9, 200520 yr okay, i have my nest box finally! ANd it cost me ?5! (Laughing out loud), not that much i dont mind! and i also have a breeding cage, what other things do i need?
May 9, 200520 yr i have an albino male and a yellow/green pied female. what can i use to put in the nest box? and i have cuttlefish and an iodine block. dont know anything else i need?
May 9, 200520 yr you can put wood shavings in the bottom of the nest tho most hens it seems like nothing in there. hand feeding formula in case you need to help out or take over fully. some egg buscuit mix to feed the parents. and fresh veggies and greens the seem to love that while feeding young. err i'm sure there is more but my mind is blank right now.
May 9, 200520 yr I didn't do anything special with mine. They didn't use any bedding in the nest box (Rainbow would kick it all out of the entrance hole) and I still let them out to fly and play with every day. They ate about three times the fresh food as usual, especially baby spinach leaves, and Skittles made liberal use of the cuttlefish. I did go out and buy some handfeeding formula just in case, but I never needed it. People say egg food is supposed to be really good for them when they are breeding, but mine wouldn't touch it. Once Skittles really settled into incubating the eggs, I would clip some millet near the entrance hole so she wouldn't have to go far for a snack if she wanted it. Rainbow spent most of his time inside the box with her, and whenever anyone would come into the room it would be his head that poked out of the box to check out who it was. He hated for her to leave it, and whenever she would come out to relieve herself and eat a little bit, he would always chase her back in. It was sweet to watch.
May 9, 200520 yr thanks, i will give them more fresh food but i doubt they will eat it because they have never touched greens before.
May 11, 200520 yr Hi there your budgies should like greens when you introduce them. Good luck keep us posted.
May 11, 200520 yr I'm would not be shocked if they amazed you and ate it now Freckle was just getting use to the idea of greens and veges but ate it like it was going out of fashion when she was feeding her babies. If you just want to try them with some egg food a simple way is to hard boil an egg and mash it up with grated carrot or even on it own and see if they will eat it.
May 11, 200520 yr i will try them on veggies, but i mgiht leave the breeding for while now.. i am considering going out and buying a new male just to be 100% sure they are not related.
May 13, 200520 yr you can put wood shavings in the bottom of the nest tho most hens it seems like nothing in there. Just to add on to that a bit, you should use PINE shavings and not cedar.
