Posted January 8, 201114 yr Hi, I'm not a professional breeder and only have four budgies (1 bred at home) with two nestlings born a week ago. After they have left the nest I will be removing the box as I don't have the room in the avairy or the know how to let them continue healthy breeding. Okay, that was backstory. One of my grown budgies who is a female and white with black eyes, undetermined age due to getting her from RSPCA (she was surrendered and had her wings clipped) is not 100 per cent. Two weeks ago I had to remove her from the rest as the shoulder of her right wing turned black under the feathers and was swollen. I took her to the vet and he thought it was a hemmorage from night fright, took her then to an Avian vet who agreed but also was not so sure, gave me calcium supplement, said it would get better. The black is still there and has not changed in appearance, the swelling though has decreased significantly but the wing shakes and just above the cere (that was browny pink last week but is now smooth and cream with one half scabby), the small feathers have come out. Now are these two things linked or are they not? Also if not, is the feather loss and ceres scab, mites/parasites? And is the black under the feathers a hermmorage or cancer/tumor or something to do with blood feathers? The avairy is outside sheltered but ventilated and there is a soft light at night. One vet said put her down, the other, she'll get better..I would like to know if anyone has seen this type of thing before (esp the black) and what can truly be done. Regards Sass.

I personally can't be of much help, but could you post some photos... they may be able to help us help you.
January 8, 201114 yr Can you give the Avian vet a call and find out if what is happening is what he would've expected?
January 8, 201114 yr The cere is unrelated..........its what happens when going out of breeding condition. The blackening of the wing sounds weird like a loss of blood supply to an area and what happens with gangrene or a bleed under the skin. Did the vet check for broken bones in that area ? Is the wing being used or is is dropped ? Photos needed. PS one box in an aviary of four isnt a good idea. Also if you dont know their ages there should be no under aged budgies ( under 12 months ) in any aviary where there are nestboxes, and any females over four years should be stopped from breeding. Nestboxes can force breed budgies no matter what their age.
