Posted January 5, 201114 yr Hi all I am new to budgies and my 9 year old daughter Jessica has just bought 4 budgies with her birthday money and they are in a 2.4 x 1.8 x 2m aviary. She spent 6 hours sitting in and outside the aviary the first day we got them. She will be a dedicated little budgierist. My question is, is it possible to finger train them in the aviary or should we put them in a cage and train them individually? And if in a cage, how do we do it? One bird at a time in the cage until it is trained? Thanks for your advice

My question is, is it possible to finger train them in the aviary NO or should we put them in a cage and train them individually? YES And if in a cage, how do we do it? One bird at a time in the cage until it is trained? YES Thanks for your advice BUT the minute they all go back in the aviary together most , if not all, of your training will go down the gurgler One only budgie ( usually a male ) will be tamed by lots of one on one attention from their significant human. A very close bond is formed. Once they have their own kind they realise thats what they would rather have.......each other. So, with your aviary its most likely best they stay as aviary birds. But maybe Jessica can do what my husband does with his princess parrots.......he goes into the aviary every late afternoon and sits on a chair amongst them. He may have a plate of treats so he just sits there and enjoys the birds and the curious ones amongst them come to him. As they are princess parrots both of us get covered from head to toe in parrots......on head, neck, shoulders, feet and climbing up our legs. But its works with Budgies too. I have around 400 budgies and I do the same thing in my aviaries. Just sit and enjoy them. We have quails too. We also have 8 brand new baby quails that hatched out three days ago PS re breeding.....................dont be tempted to add nestboxes to a communal aviary in a hurry. its the hardest way to breed budgies successfully. And you must be certain that any budgies where nestboxes are, are over 12 months of age. Look forward to any photos you have.
January 5, 201114 yr Author Thanks Kaz. That helps me a heap. Jessica will be upset to know that she can't taim them in an aviary. Maybe she could buy a cage and buy a new budgie to train. I have read that about the nesting boxes. Her budgies are only 8 weeks old. The breeder we bought them from said to put the boxes in now for them to sleep in if they want, and that any eggs laid would be sterile. I like what you have said, and will wait. Jess will take some pics today and I will post them. Thanks Heaps.

Both male and female budgies are trainable, but you'll find males don't bite as hard as females, and you can teach males to talk also. As to the nest box advice you got... that's really bad! Budgies don't sleep in nest boxes or snuggle huts or any of that other stuff they try and sell you in pet shops. Once they leave the nest box, i.e. fledge, that's it. A breeder should really know that sort of stuff... Anyway, I'm glad you came here to get better advice and I look forward to the photos.

Thats the stupidest advice you have been given so far. Budgies dont need nestboxes to sleep in and it can force babies to breed too early by the mere presence of them. A good sign not to go back to that breeder. They have shown their lack of knowledge by that statement alone Edited January 5, 201114 yr by **KAZ**
March 8, 201213 yr While I realise it is probably a little late it may still be of help. Check out this thread it is for training up to 6 birds at once. http://forums.budgiebreeders.asn.au/index.php?showtopic=31724
March 9, 201213 yr Hi My advice would be for you to buy a booklet about the care of Budgies from your Pet store. This will give you the basics so you will be better able to ask any further questions you have on this site. Can I suggest that if your unsure about what to do. Please ask before you do it. Sorry if that sounds a little patronising. My personal opinion is to put all the birds in a cage & have a look at my web site. or check out taming & training on this site. Yours B.J.
