New Budgie

Hi, I am new here. I just got my new budgie. I chose him because he looked happy and chirpy. He is about 8 weeks old and has some amazing colors. Anyway it hates me. I have only had him 1 week. Am I jusmping to conclusions and been too impatient in letting him settle in? He has a good home, good cage. Is he suffering separation anxiety or something? He bites me so hard it draws blood. He has just started chirping after 5 days. He is eating okay. Just wondering if his scared violent biting will stop soon? His name is Frodo. I will post a photo.

My questions have probably been asked a thousand times but I appreciate any good advice. I purchased him from a good credible source.

Thanks

Marcus

was he sold to you as a tame budgie or one out of a flight cage with a group of them. If not tame then you need to take the time to bond with him. this can takes months not weeks

Sounds to me you are rushing the hand taming and he isn't use to hands. have you got any treats for him such as millet? This is always something to help with the training as they love it.

Talk to him always even when just passing his cage.

you need to use a online site to store the picture such as Photobucket or tiny pics

Thanks. He has millet, and is spoilt. I think I am just impatient. I am on holidays and have speaking to him all day. I think I am just being impateint. Since he bights so hard and draws blood I am a bit scared of handling him again.

was hoping to see a picture, Frodo is a girl and judging by the colour of the cere slightly older than 8 weeks , i would say 3-4 months. She is a beautiful yellowface recessive pied.

Hens do tend to bite a bit harder (my got me some good ones in her time) but any bird will bite. As she is scared of your hand and is threatened she is biting in the hopes you will stay away from her.

Have a read with our taming area for some tips but i would look at getting her a new cage.

Something like this:

rounds ones aren't good for birds. and Budgie need a wider cage to give them room to move and fly, tho it looks like she has clipped wings to help with training and hand taming.

Thanks for advice. How do you know it's a girl?

the coloured bit above the beak is called the cere and is what is used to sex budgies.

young males - bight pink cere

adult males - dark blue

ino and recessive pied males keep the baby colour always

young hens - pale blue/white cere

adult hens - tan/brown crusty cere

when out of breeding condition they have the light blue ceres.

He bites me so hard it draws blood.

That to me would scream out "girl budgie" more than anything. Males can draw blood but 9 times out of 10 when you hear of bites that hard it is from a hen =/

Shey may not have the type of personality to ever be the budgie you want her to be. Perhaps you could take her back and get a young male? I shouldn't recommend such wanton swapping and disregarding of birds, but I know how important it is for those wanting to bond with a bird to find a bird they can actually bond with and have a good experience with.

It is still early days and she may settle in and become tame with time and PATIENCE, but its so hard to know if and when that will happen when things start this way.
