Posted December 30, 201014 yr okay so I wasn't sure what forum subject to put this into. So I decided to put it into behavior. This may be long and winded so please bare with me. So I had gotten my first 2 budgies back in 2009, from 2 became 3, 4, then 5. Well they were all placed into a small flight cage together before I really decided to breed them and before I became a member of this forum and got information that I needed to keep 5 budgies in one cage, plus breeding information. Well I went ahead and ordered breeding cages because I seen them starting to pair off, Mama Tweet with Booger, Bugle with Stewart and Mr. Tweekers was left alone. Well while they still were living in the same cage mama t and booger started to mate which is why I placed a nest box in the cage (which I know now wasn't a good idea because mama tweet got aggressive with bugle which is a female.) So mama tweet took over the nestbox and I noticed Bugle wanted to use it. So I took bugle, stewart, and mr tweeker and put them in a separate cage. Also put a nestbox in the new cage. Almost instantly bugle and stewart bred and bugle laid two eggs. Sitting on them only for a week then leaving them alone. So I disgarded them being that they were infertile. Bugle had continued to mate with stewart during that whole spring and summer but never laid anymore eggs and seem uninterested in the nestbox. I decided to get Mr.Tweekers out of the cage since I thought maybe that is why she is uncomfortable, Plus I wanted to pair him up with Meanie a female I had bought early 2010. So Mr. Tweekers was removed and paired off. Bugle and Stewart began to court in full force at the time Tweekers was removed but still no eggs. I had rearranged the bird room since I had gotten new, nicer cages for all plus Booger and Mama tweets first babies were about to be removed from there cage so I needed to rearrange. By this time it seemed Bugle was interested in the nestbox again. So I figured that maybe she liked the new location of the cage. But to my dismay she never laid any eggs. They had continued to court through the end of summer but I think about october they both have became quiet, she doesn't go near the nestbox anymore and she doesn't seem interested in Stewart anymore. She plays with her toys and goes about her merry way. Stewart has seemed to become uninterested in her now, because she ignores him. So it will be a year in the first week of March since she has laid her only 2 eggs. Has this ever happened to anyone before?? Did I do something wrong?? It doesn't seem like I did but who knows. Thanks For Reading this and sorry so long, Jaime
December 30, 201014 yr When you leave the nestbox in there all the time, is not beneficial for birds to breed. What I think you need to do is to adopt this policy. You want these birds paired right, so remember the pairings you want. Do not leave them in the breeding cages paired, put them into a bigger space where they can have some room to fly. When you notice that the hens cere is starting to become tan, move her and her proposed partner into a breeding cage. The following day, attach a nestbox. You must ensure that they are healthy and ready to breed. The cere colour is the prime example that they are ready to breed. You must also ensure they are in good condition. Experience shows that just because they are in breeding cages it does not mean they will breed, and it often results in them ignoring the breeding box. You have done will so far with the seperation of birds into breeding pairs in cages. You are headed down the right path. It is all about timing now.
December 30, 201014 yr Author Ahhh yes. You see I did remove the nest box in mama tweet and boogers cage and they have stopped the mating but do still play and keep eachother company. The breeding cages I have them in are pretty roomy and big. So I shall remove the nestbox in Stewart and Bugles cage. Do you think that they do not like eachother anymore or lost interest in eachother?? Because it seems when I removed the nestboxes in the other cages the pairs were no breeding but still seemed to be interested in eachother. Do you think maybe one is sick? Or infertile? They don't seem to be ill but maybe I am missing something. I will though take your adivice and thank you for your response!!! Jaime
