Hi there all, my name is Moshe and I am new to this forum. I have a number of questions which I will ask over time, but for now just one question. I live in an apartment and have a large indoor cage. I have a pair of birds which I want to breed. I have also toyed with the idea of two pair of birds and two nesting boxes. Would this work? or would I be better off putting in a partition first to keep the seperate? What are your expert opinions. Thanks in advance.

Hi Moshe,

Welcome to the forum. I wouldn't call myself an expert, and I have only just joined as well, but I might as well tell you what I think. I reckon it depends on the dimensions of your cage. If it is a reasonable size, and has space for more than the nesting boxes, than it would be okay for there to be more than one box. Check out some of the pictures of breeding cages, or outside aviaries with under 20 birds. Budgies are community animals, so I don't think that you would have a problem with agression, but you never know. The only possible flaw in the plan is the type of cage, because if it is a "pet" cage then the nesting boxes would be hard to connect.

Like I said, I could have got this completely wrong, so check with one of the real experts of the forum before doing anything drastic.

You are way better off having only ONE PAIR to a cage with their own nesting box. Anything else is called colony breeding and risks the lives of parents and eggs and chicks from fights over possession of boxes etc.

Noone can advise you on whether or not a cage is big enough unless sizes are given. Everyone has a different idea of what "LARGE" is :)

Thought I'd got it wrong. :(
