Posted May 8, 200520 yr I recently found why my budgie hasent been able to jump from one perch to another and grip onto the perch very well he has been like this for months. And i finnaly found out why its because he has a lump on his leg i didnt see it before because his feathers was covering it up i did take him to the vets quite a while ago but they didnt know because i have rubbish vets down where i live. Does anyone know what it is called and how to treat it.
May 8, 200520 yr James- you HAVE to find a good vet, i work at one here in the US and that lump could be a number of things. 1st question does your budgie have a band on that leg? if so take it off right away, with lump and swellings the leg could self amputate and its as gross as it sounds. The lump could be a swelling around a break, budgies can brake there legs just playing in there cage, of course there are usually underlying issues when this happens so easily. It could also be a tumor which is more likely, it could be benign or cancerous. Usually at my practice we prefer to just surgically remove it, sometimes we biopsy it first to see if its cancer or not so that we then know to be sure to get the whole thing. In a worse case scenerio we would amputate, but trust me budgies do awesome with one leg, they do after all have 2 wings to help. I actually had an adoptee who had one leg amputated because of a large grape size mass. We had to amputate because the previous owners didn't notice! then it got to be so big it took over her whole leg. so make sure you don't wait till it gets bigger. I don't want to scare you but a lump could be so many things some that are no big deal, some that could cost your little guy his life. I hope someone on this site can give you a referral for a good vet. good luck keep me posted. concerned, Kristi
